I have very broad tastes in music but this is one of the guys I really liked, John Martyn god rest his alcoholic soul I saw him several times in concert in the various University's of Scotland but I also saw him when he turned up with Danny Kyle a few times at our home folk club in the 80's, the man was a raw physical presence and one hell of a drunk but by god when he picked up that guitar he could bend the Universe. Like the recent loss of Gerry Rafferty and the loss of Danny a few years back, although fewer will ever have heard of Danny, losing John Martyn was a great loss to the world of music :violin: and to Scotland :scotland: well ok the UK
I really like J.M. also Solid Air is my favourite. I saw him live in the early 70s - excellent He was so chatty on stage too.
I could sort of play that one saw him at the Elephant fair i think 83-4 great presence bugger there dropping like fly,s
Must say I enjoyed the 'interview' Very honest. I hadn't ever really listened to his stuff before, but when you understand a little of whats behind and the driving force it becomes something.
I can bash out a very basic version of "May You Never" too Keith it's a nice simple basic melody but I can't go to any of the places he goes with the picking and so on. The times he turned up at our club he just walked in off the street fairly pished along with Danny (Kyle) who was a good mate of John's and did a floor spot completely mesmerising the entire audience Danny used to run our club, started it in the mid 60's but by the mid 80's Gerry O'Donnell and his brother were running it and doing the MC role on a Sunday night and I remember on one occasion John turned up with nae guitar and immediately walked up to my pal Gerry McGillion and stole his my pal didn't mind
Ah this is the one I was looking for, probably one of the first things of his I ever heard and one of my favourites for that era -
