I would like to have your thoughts and experiences of Filipinos coming to the UK and learning to drive
My wife hasn't attempted to learn to drive here and didn't drive in the Philippines. But she makes a good back seat driver. LOL. Her friend drove in the Philippines and drove here for a year on her Philippines license but she has had to get a Manx license which means taking the Manx driving test which is the same as but a bit stiffer than the UK test, by all accounts. I think her friend drives an automatic here as that is what she was used to in the Philippines.
Ah right, one of the questions I was going to ask you've answered regarding transferring licence and so on. I recently persuaded the loved one to start driving in the Phils in preparation for coming here, unfortunately she had a small shunt at a junction and its put her off a bit. I thought that once she's here a while it might give her a little interest learning to drive. Show me a woman that doesn't make a good back seat driver LOL, we shouldn't really go down that road, or should we LOL
That's for the Isle of Man, mind. Not sure if it is the same for a Filipino coming to the UK mainland. I have a feeling it is easier in the UK, but not sure.
My wife will be learning to drive soon. She never learned to drive in the Philippines, but I guess she will when she heads back there this summer (to keep up the practice).
I think its a good idea, if nothing else it makes them less dependant on us to take them out shopping and to the supermarket etc. Lets face it could you envisage not driving yourself.
I drive in the Philippines and I have driven numerous times in the UK from country roads to the Motorway. It wasn't that hard driving in the UK, I just had issues at first with the lane to use as it is different from the Philippines. Other than getting on the wrong lane, I was very much fine and driving like a local
Erm......, you mean breaking every speed limit, overtaking on blind bends, parking in two parking bays at the same time, driving without Insurance and MOT only joking, really aimed at all us British drivers.
Although my wife has a full Filipino driving licence, she hasn't got a clue about road signs, speed limits, directions... Panics as soon as I overtake o a lorry on the motorway or viceversa... Worst passenger ever............ If she was to try for a UK Drivers Licence, and for some strange miracle obtain it, I feel would have a mini stroke every time she picks the car keys up..............
I thought that they would be more comfortable learning to drive in the UK than the Phils as most of the drivers here in the UK (London excluded) drive reasonably compared with the Phils.
I've had a few where the meter runs faster than I can blink like one of the Manila airport taxis but I don't think they were Filipino LOL Good question though, wonder if there are any Filipino taxi drivers here, no doubt someone will tell us here.
Do you mean the yellow cabs? I've not tried them yet, all the other airport taxi's at NAIA are fixed price contracts set at the office before you get in the taxi, there is no meter, if they put you on meter as well they were well at it, never had that happen to me in 25 arrivals.
The yellow ones at the airport are okay, I usually meet the loved one there, its the white ones outside the airport. On a couple of occasions when the yellow taxi rank has been packed we have walked outside the airport to get a cab. I've had a few taxis from the little office there at arrivals to take me to hotels and yes they are fixed price. To be honest I don't mind being ripped off on the way in because I'm tired and weary and just want to sleep. It actually upsets the lady more than me, she feels well grieved. Most major cities are like this not just Manila. I always like the airports where you wait for the taxi and you are given a ticket with the price you should pay, this way it takes the hassle out of the whole thing.
