My wife informed me today that the baby suit that we bought in BabyGap the other week in Edinburgh was in fact made in the Philippines (on the label). And then she told me that Gap has a retail presence in the Philippines with shops in Makati and Ayala. I have bought a lot of Gap clothes over the years, including in the USA for both myself and my other kids and noted that their clothes are often made in Asia. But didn't know they made them in the Philippines.
There is a fairly active rag trade set up. Sometimes labelling can be deceptive; I remember walking round a garment factory in Subic Bayin the 90's and being struck by the labels being sewn in to some quite nice check shirts of the "lumberjack" variety - "MADE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" (!) I can also remember handing a lot of cotton yarn destined for the Philippines which purported to have been grown on the broad rolling acres of.... Macau!
