I was just reading the "ex-ex-pat" thread and saw that some guy's had returned to their homeland due to the high cost of medical care.
I plan to retire permanently to RP within the next couple of years and was wondering what sort of medical insurance some of the longer term ex-pats either use or have used, if any at all. Costs seem to vary from around $1,000 p.a. for very basic cover upto $2,500 - $3,000 for a far more comprehensive coverage, I have also heard of people taking out annual travel insurance that covers all medical so long as they return once per year back to their home country and renew, this can be done for around $600 I believe. Can anybody share their experiences .....??

    Hi,
Annual Travel insurance policies usually limit the length of a trip to 30 to 90? days with multiple trips per year covered. I used an AIG annual policy when in & out of S'Pore every few weeks but this type of policy would not cover permanent residency medical costs in PI. :erm:

Thanks for that Wolverine, it seems relatively cheap for the hospital cover, however I could see a person soon being out of pocket with so many low peso per year limits on many of the services offered.... (and no coverage overthe age of 60) I'm hoping to be around for a lot longer than that....;)

I got an online quote for travel insurance for a trip lasting just short of 1 year and I was quoted $580... I didn't read all of the small print but I think it may be dependent on having a home address in the country where the policy is taken out, will have to do some more research into this...

I posted a question about Medical Insurance on another forum a year or two ago and nobody could post full details of their medical insurance in the Philippines.
I got the impression that ex-pats who moved there used the Filipino medical insurance which seemed very basic from what I remember.
I am sure we would all like to know more about this should we decide to emigrate there one day.

Get your Mrs to enroll in Philheath and have her add your name to the policy.. Cost about 20 quid a year and can cover up to 50% of your hospital bill.. That % does seem to vary and Im not sure about all the ins and outs as never really bothered to do any serious research.. From memory the coverage begins 6 months from enrollment..
We have been here nearly 6 years this trip and must have saved a fortune just staying healthy!! Long may it continue.

I currently have private medical insurance in Australia with a company called Medibank, they also provide "medical only" travel insurance, they quoted me Annual multi trip "fully comprehensive" insurance for $430 for a maximum of 60 days per trip, I was quoted $306 for single trip unlimited "medical only" insurance for a 12 month trip covering the U.K. and South East Asia with the majority of time spent in RP.
Both policies have a $100 excess, the only stipulation on the 12 month single trip insurance is that I leave my home in Australia and return to my home in Australia, this does not present any real problems for me, so long as I have an address in Australia even though I will be "travelling" for 11 months of each year and I then return "home" each year then I can see nothing stopping me taking out another 12 month single trip policy each time I leave Australia. Medibank also have a 24 hour emergency desk that must be contacted if medical costs are likely to exceed $4,000, they will then deal directly with the hospital and cover the expenses directly. They say that if something appears to be too good to be true it most likely is, however I cannot find anything that would prevent me covering my medical insurance in this way.
