I got a bottle of Veuve Devanlay Brut Champers from Morrison's for 9 quid a couple of days ago, I opened it today 1st of January and I have to say it is very nice, I have a bottle of Bollinger in the house as well but I might save that for my birthday and get and get another bottle of Veuve Devanlay today Shocking that Morrison's is open today, really feel sorry for the folk that have to work there!
You got to admit the Bank Holiday and Sunday trading laws are a mess. Our store opened on Boxing Day and only took 2.5K, when normally on a Sunday it would be 10K. Hardly worth the effort when you consider heat, electic, lighting and staff costs. I think its plain to see the likes of Morrisons are struggling so every penny counts even if it means opening on New Years Day. Might as well open 24/7/365 and be done with it. Having worked in retail for over 25 years, I always dread this time of the year, yesterday it was mad, I call it headless chicken mode, the store is closed for 1 DAY so quick, panic, panic, get the shopping in. I predict Morrisons will disappear within 2 years, possibly merge with Sainsburys. The food retail sector is experiencing massive carnage never seen before and none of them have a clue what to do about it. If they all start to copy Lidl and Aldi, its a race to the bottom, who can sink first. Never before has food shopping been so cheap, and consumers are the only winners.
Sainsbury's I like, we only have Morrison's here and I quite liked them until the recent revamp, totally remapped the store and now I have no idea where anything is, a merger with Sainsbury's would be good for the town. We have a Netto here and they are great value, they're a joint venture with Sainsbury's and have a really good range. But you're right the customer is the only winner, at least for now, from the farmer to the shop staff they all get crushed in the search for turnover and profit.
I had some nice drinks last night. Started with a few belgian beers then onto some slovakian home made spirit produced from fallen fruit. I think around 55% that came with quite a fiery kick. Later sipping some very nice Armagnac with good friends
I live on the I o Wight. I worked at Tesco for Xmas..25 years ago. Sainsbury's were building a store at the time..tesco were worried! Now..we have 2 morrisons..2lidl..an aldi...and several local Tesco and Sainsbury. And an m & s...only missing is Asda..but that's next on the list. only business to suffer is the co op.
I'm probably a bit common, I had a few Corona beers followed by a bottle of Baileys, whilst watching Jools annual Hootenanny, knowing full well it was pre-recorded back in November
Im a lot common The aromatic Armagnac was provided by the The Don. Quite enjoyed Jools hootenanny on a few occasions, good show to watch when the beer is plentiful.
Pity that the younger generation played up and guests started departing earlier than anticipated............ As There was some Italian Vecchia Romagna Brandy, and copious lashings of 10 years old Tawny Port ready to be enjoyed. I am reliably told that something is happening today as well..............
Yes twas a shame but a nice evening had by all nonetheless. Yes Im reliably informed also. Bambino duty for me.
They are here again... Wearing their pijamas and stuffing their faces .. At least Mike is here. So we can endure and give each other support while suffering.. I will have to try the brandy by myself tho. He is driving... bummer..
Its a tough life. Enjoy the brandy Just watching The Revenant. Looks a good un, especially were Lianardo gets attacked by the bear.
Not sure if this is the right thread... But a very happy new year to everyone.. I hope Christmas was good and that 2016 is a huge success for you.
My remaining and selected (after the cull) extended family know just how to keep me sweet. I received numerous varieties and sizes of bottled beers to sample. A couple of cases of red wine and ................3 bottles of Krug Champers. Can't say I'd every buy any of the flavoured beers again although the San Miguel Cerveza Negra did have something about it that I'd like to try again. Reminded me of sweeter version of the black beer I could get in Japan. Absolutely nothing at all like Guinness BTW Someone bought me a couple of 5 litre drums of Heineken and they both got emptied in one night. Well Christmas is for sharing I also had a 6-pack of Carlsberg. Not from their UK brewery in my home town, but a nice touch and a chance to recall the whiff of place on a still summer day Food wise, I really don't find that much here to give me the traditional Christmas comfort. Had some nice ham and some nice King Crab legs but that soon went. Plenty of spaghetti though. Sweet, Sweeter, Extra Sweet and Filipino Style Not my cup of tea I've kind of decided to 'get away' next Christmas and New Year.
