    From the BBC:

"Mindanao is a beautiful island in the southern Philippines - yet in and around the city of Cotabato there are several rebel groups, extortion gangs, and clans with their own private armies. There are also tens of thousands of people trying to live a normal life. The main rebel group signed a roadmap for peace with the government in 2012. What will this mean for those living there?"

    John,
I was in Davao over the Christmas period, and also went to Midsayap.

Just before I arrived in Davao, this occurred....
JI terrorist killed in Davao City

I also passed at least 12 police/army roadblocks on the way to/from Midsayap, altho' only about 3 or 4 were manned.

Whilst in Midsayap, this was reported -
Extort gang behind bus blast in SK – police

Yes, the peace treaty is holding, but the situation is still volatile and often uneasy.

If anyone is thinking about traveling into Western Mindanao (from Davao), make sure you do your research, and try to travel with her family.
Going alone, especially if it's a first time visit to meet your intended is not a good idea.
