Mount Sinabung Indonesia

The BBC reports on the eruption of Mount Sinabung in neighbouring Indonesia, the country with the most active volcanoes in the world, apparently.

This one lay dormant for centuries before erupting in 2010 and has been active on and off ever since.

Not that far, relatively speaking, from Banda Aceh which suffered terribly in the Tsunami 26 December, 2004.
I will never forget the videos from there (one example) :

This image extracted from Google tells the story. Sinabung is quite close to Aceh. But note the subduction arc ( top left to bottom right) that runs due south of Sumatra and beyond past Java. This is a plate boundary. One plate subducting under the other. The volcanic activity and other seismic activity will be related to that.

They are related of course, just expressions of the same forces at different moments in time.

Quoting from NASA. “Active subduction off the Indian Ocean coast of Sumatra is responsible for both the region’s geography and its earthquakes. Although rare on human timescales, over geologic time earthquakes are frequent in the area. The same forces that produce the earthquakes also created Sumatra, its volcanoes, the nearby islands, and shaped the sea floor.”
