My wife has been on at me to buy some fresh mussels, as she likes them and hasn't had any since she left the Philippines. We started to look about and nobody had any. One place we went to hadn't had any for a month. And others had been sold out that morning. We discovered that they can be bought for £4.50 a kilo. However they can't be had at any price at the moment. We also discovered that they aren't harvested locally and come in from Ireland or the UK. After a week or so of looking in earnest, we tracked some down at £6.50 a kilo. So we bought a kilo bag full. For her not me as I don't like them. And then my wife told me that she used to buy them in Cavite for about 30 or 40 pesos a kilo. WOW. Thats a big difference. She cooked them earlier in coconut milk with garlic and chillies.
We got ours (the wife's, I won't touch them!) from tesco's fish counter atleast once a week. Can't remember how much but they came in a net bag. Cooked in white wine, shallots, and garlic for about 3 minutes.
Muscles . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mussels Perhaps she is suggesting that you should visit the gym.
They sell at £3.75 a Kilo, and they normally are rope grown from Scotland. We do get them from time to time and I love "Moules Mariniere"............. White wine, garlic, cream.... And lots of fresh crunchy bread to dip in the sauce....
Oops. I knew Muscles didnt look quite right. We tried Tesco here. But they dont seem to have them either. I know they have had them in the past.
LOL. If so she is probably right. Up to a few years ago I had muscles that many 20 year olds would be proud of as I did visit the gym at least 3 times a week. I was "single" again then. However, for a combination of reasons, I havent been going and it does seem to make a difference.
The biggest mussel farm in the UK is in Wales apparently. Menai Straits. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00qslzz
