I dont think that a tablet is suitable for everyone. It depends on the individuals needs and pocket. Having said that peoples needs tend to evolve. I wonder how many of us once said that there was no way we would have a mobile phone?

But to give you an example. Though before I start, I have never downloaded a video from iTunes and I haven't had much inclination to do so. But if I wanted I could rent (for the wife) Twighlight Dawn 2 at £4.49 in HD or £3.49 in SD. It would be mine to watch for a limited period of time on my Ipad or Laptop. The thing about the tablet is that it is portable, probably more so than a laptop. That means that its at its best advantage particularly when you are on the move, a traveller or if you are never in one place. With a 4G enabled tablet you could theoretically watch that movie, almost at the drop of a hat at any time you wished, provided you were within 4G coverage. Some people can and do make full use of that technology. But I appreciate that it isn't for everyone, especially while prices are high.

Just an example of the benefits of a tablet. If you go for one of the smaller tablets then you can hold them in one hand and / or put them in your handbag...:D

I believe it is also possible to purchase movies and store them on a "cloud" of some form and then play them at will. But have no direct experience of that.

I notice that some very sleek laptops available now are almost tablets with a lid. No hard drive no CD drive. For some that might be preferable to a tablet.

I'm now thinking along the tablet line. I take a laptop away to work with me (13inch asus with now cd drive) and all I use it for is to watch programes I've downloaded (stored on an external hard drive) and surf the net / emails. I can now plug my external hard drive into the tv in my cabin / home. We have wifi onboard so I can use my phone to check for email etc so I'm now thinking that I can just leave my heavy laptop at home and carry a tablet and a couple of external drives with me.

Just my situation and probably of little help to any one else but may shead some light.

I think you are right Stu. They are a tad more portable, taking up a little less space.

I totally agree John, tablets aren't for everyone. You need to weigh up what you need/want to do when you're on the move. If a tablet can fulfil those needs and wants then it's a perfect travelling companion. Its small, convenient, fast and instant. No more waiting for start up etc.

As I mentioned before, I was very unconvinced I could make good use of one but since we got one I've never taken a laptop with me on any trip.

    Yes Jim,
    I feel the same.
If they had bigger SSD's I would be interested.
I saw the Samsung Note 10.1 and that seemed to have some useful features but still too expensive.

Just popped into HMV to enquire about the release of the Hobbit DVD. It comes with Ultra Violet, apparently. I asked about that and was told that is a form of Cloud. So you can buy the DVD itself but a copy is kept for you on the "cloud" and included in the price. If you so choose you could then watch the DVD from anhywhere there is 4G (or broadband) reception and stream it to your tablet from the Cloud. Apparently this form of the technology is catching on.

I was chatting to my employer's wife and they stream or download to iPad(s) quite a lot - everywhere and anywhere. If they download (rent) then the movie is theirs to watch once, for a limited period of time on Netflix or something. (Mind you, they don't have a conventional TV in their house). I believe it works over 3G.

    https://signup.netflix.com/

What does this amount to? Less bulk to carry around.

Just got the wife on ebay a 2 month old nexus 7 32Gb with red leather case and stylus for £170 on ebay. Still got 10 months on the garuantee. I'll see what its like and then I may think about the nexus 10 for myself. It'll do for the wife anyway, get the kindle and sonos app and set it up for the email etc.

I think on the nexus 10 you can plug an external hard drive in so that'll be me sorted.

Good old ebay. :like: I remember you having a bad experience with them over a camera or lense?

Good memory. I was selling a lens on behalf of my dad, got a whole load of trouble over it which I'll not get into on the public part of the forum. Posting on the public area actually esculated the problem somewhat as well! But I had a lot of good advice from alot of folk on here (which my dad and I are still very grateful for), I've learnt to be a lot more careful what I post on the net and in what areas of forums. but the main point is i'll never, never, ever sell on ebay again.

Just as a side note my dad is still using the lens, still exhibiting picutures taken with the lens and has another bloke from the same club interested in buying it. This other guy has used it, examined it and is pretty happy with the condition.

Looks liike I've not really learnt what I'll post in the public part of the forum!
