 "The rehabilitation of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport’s (NAIA) terminal one will begin on January next year after the government awarded the contract to the DMCI Holdings Inc. The Consunji-led construction company, which built SM Megamall, outbid two other rivals for the rehabilitation project, including the Yuchengco-managed Engineering Equipment Inc. (EEI). Among the things that will be prioritized in the upgraded terminal are aditional exit taxiways that will allow planes to leave the main runway quicker so that there will be more takeoffs and landings. Of course, new toilets and ceilings that won't collapse are also on the list. DMCI Holdings Inc. has been given a "rehab deadline" of December 2014. Thus, the upgraded terminal would be ready for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, which the Philippines is hosting in 2015. Industrial designer Kenneth Cobonpue, interior designer Budji Layug, and the group of architect Royal Pineda will reportedly be on board as design consultants. It may be recalled that Cobonpue, Layug, and Pineda had submitted an unsolicited rehab plan for the airport back in 2011." http://anc.yahoo.com/news/coming-so...1-as-upgrade-begins-in-january-053638790.html
I truly wonder if this will come to pass: there is vested interest in ensuring it won't, not least from SM Holdings which now is the majority owner of Philippine Airlines. I really doubt that adding extra runway exits will have any lasting beneficial effect but a second runway would. However I do hope the developers do considerably more than replace a few ceilings and upgrade the toilet facilities.
Well to be fair there is nothing they can do to make it worse!! It really needs a vast improvement. It always appeared to me they actually forgot there would be passengers using it when the "designed" and built departures.
not enough of them; always overcrowded. I would like to know more about the T3 business and why T1 is not being replaced - presumably planning blight?
As the country's premier international gateway, Terminal 1 is a disgrace. The toilets in departures are bad enough, those in arrivals are far, far worse. The current plan is just the latest in a long line of proposals put forward by rival groups with vested interests. But it is probably the only plan that stands a chance of being at least partly implemented. One plan called for all international traffic to use Terminal 3, sharing it with Cebu Pacific, PAL Express and Air Asia Zest; Terminal 1 would then be redeveloped probably as an hotel. Another plan - put forward by San Miguel - is to develop a new airport for the exclusive use of PAL which would then free-up Terminal 2 for international airlines and Terminal 1 would be converted into business centre cum hotel. A third plan is to move all international flights, except PAL's, to Clark; that plan was doomed to fail due to the lack of any rail link which was seen as being far too expensive. Terminal 3 was designed for domestic and regional flights and therefore its apron and gate separations are for narrow-bodied aircraft such as A319/A320 and 737s. Internally the terminal would need to be somewhat redesigned to increase the international side plus further jetways, baggage and human scanners etc., would need to be installed. All do-able but for the fact that the terminal is technically owned by its German-led construction consortium who would doubtless oppose as they are still owed big money.
I thought the same!! Terminal 3 is where you get domestic flights as well isn't? If it is its not a bad airport. Still suffers from mental queues etc and a lack of proper sitting / resturants etc but its definatley better than the international
Its all very well installing new toilets, but are they going to be able to have toilet paper available as well? Every time I use any of the terminals at NAIA, there is never any toilet paper.
I hade the same experience in the Malls........... But as I was forewarned on the old ASAWA Forum, I always carried some TP sheets in my cargo pants pockets and a small packet of wet-wipes... Better safe than sorry............
Been traveling a lot the past month here in the Philippines and abroad and the improved toilets are something that I have noticed. Not perfect but then it is better than the old ones!
Terminal 3 is where you get domestic flights as well. Use it at least once a month and the queues are never that bad. There is a lack of seating.
Terminal 3 is a mix of domestic ad international flights, mostly operated by Cebu Pacific. A number of domestic flights by PAL and a umber of international flights by AirAsia operates from here. Terminal 4 is exclusively domestic flights where AirAsia and the other carriers operate from
I don't get all the negative comments about NAIA 1, first time I ever travelled there I travelled from Manchester to Dubai and Dubai to Manila, Terminal 3 at Manchester was pretty depressing back then and to be honest it still is, Dubai was obviously shiny, clean and very modern but a bit soulless. Departing from Manila via NAIA 1 I have always used the Club Manila lounge which has unfortunately just been upgraded and is not as nice as it used to be (no aquarium any more) the loo's there are ok, better than my local pub here in the UK. While I was in that lounge the other day I heard an old English guy quite loudly telling all and sundry how NAIA 1 was the worst terminal in the world and how Club Manila was the only thing that made it bearable, again I just don't see it plenty of UK airports are run down and dumpish, NAIA serves its purpose it gets people in and out of the country with reasonable efficiency.
I compare NAIA 1 to other airports I have been to and I have to say it isn't the best I have been to by quite a margin. It reminds me of international airports that I was in a decade or two ago like in Libya and Angola. However I must say I wasn't particular keen on either of the two main Saudi airports I went through a couple of years ago. The biggest issue I have with it is that it isn't open like most other international airports and like Terminal 3 ( or is it T4? ). But it is at least functional. I do think that it is worth the Philippine government investing in it as it is the gateway to the Philippines.
As I never, ever, have known NAIA 1/2/3/4/5/6/ in any way, shape or form, I find myself totally unable to comment on the place apart from taking the mickey................. Port and brandy at work.......
