I am confused as to what this charge covers one for . The question is in regard of my future wife (filipina) and her young daughter. I gather that eye tests are chargeable as are dentistry ,but when spoke to my local surgery they talked of £50 to see a doctor + £15 for him/her to write a prescription + £15 at the chemists . Is this correct and are there any other hidden charges ? or have I been miss-informed ?

Once you are married and paid the NHS Surcharge, your wife would will be entitled to the same access to NHS services as a UK permanent resident. Until the NHS Surcharge is paid (which is not applicable for a Fiancee Visa) I think she will be liable to pay NHS charges. So it may be a good idea to get married and apply for FLR(M) ASAP.

It will not cost you anything to see a doctor in the UK once you have registered at your local surgery and it will only cost a few pounds for a prescription regardless of the cost of the medication you require. Hospital treatment will be free too.

Eye tests you will pay for under most circumstances, dentistry you can register with a NHS dentist where it is subsidised or go privately, I think I can speak for a lot of Filipinos when I say that they usually wait if possible until they visit the Philippines to see the dentist, private dentist here in the UK are quite expensive, depending on the extent of dentistry required of course.

Best to get dentistry work done before coming to the UK - whether arrival is on a fiancee visa or a spouse visa.
