What has Miliband the Younger done? By setting the conditions right to allow Momentum to germinate and fester like an open sore upon the Labour party when he was that party's hapless and luckless leader, he has unwittingly unleashed grassroots activism on the populus. A month or two ago, Moggmentum was born - yes, it really does exist but only to wind-up Guardian and BBC journalists.

Now there's Acti√ate, the new Tory grassroots outfit intent on becoming the Tories' answer to Momentum. Thing is, whilst "Acti√ate" might sound like a wizard name for a collection of like-minded activists, the name can so easily be mocked by opposers simply by adding two letters. And is it such a good idea to promote the image of well-educated toffiness by stylising the "v" into a square-root symbol?

That the Conservatives need a grassroots organisation has long been known. This is a work-in-progress, if it lives that long.
