And remember, we had to get a special dispensation for keeping the pint in the pub, more EU nonsense.
John is correct but here is a little more meat on the bones..... For anyone interested, the air guns fire at regular intervals, controlled by the on-board navigation system. The prospect area is usually a grid of lines where the vessel should travel towing guns and cables. The air guns or "source" is on a known position called a shotpoint and the shock wave travels down and through the sea bed where it will be reflected back up to be "heard" by hydrophones inside many streamers (cables) that are also towed by the ship. The hydrophones send their signals along the streamer to the instrument room where they are stored on data tapes to be interpreted later when maps of the earth's structure are made. The streamer's position is known as there is a tail-buoy transmitting it's position at all times to the instrument room on the ship. When I started in the 70's ships pulled one cable and I had to fire the guns by pressing a button at the right time. Technology have moved on so much since then. Paravanes or “doors” are put into the sea on either side port and starboard and cause the streamer array to stretch outwards and not tangle up. The air guns are in the water behind the ship where you can see the sea water is churned up.
Geco Diamond at the moment, and Geco Neptune for a few weeks earlier this year, and Geco tau for ten years before that. 23 years all told, in this game. Which boat are you on? I'm fed up of the whole game actually, it has turned into too much health and safety, procedures, work instructions, rules, regulations, reports, blah blah blah.
Just be glad it did not stray towards Hitler and the Nazis or sheeps and kittens. Hahahahah... And here I am, still hoping that job offer by Chevron is still on, but the oil industry is on a down market now. It's very unlikely. Even one of my mates who's been a long-time barge captain is out of job.
And then there is 2D, 3D and 4D variants. Bright spots, dim spots etc etc. bla bla bla And if you really want to know more, these guys will tell you: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTlPkoY2nXia5rR1hZp8DJA
What is your prediction with the way the oil and gas industry is going? When is it going back up? Is it really down, or are companies just hoarding it in, price fixing or something.
If you check the predictions every day then they contradict one another. Nobody knows. It is crystal ball time. I have been in the industry since 1973, with 3 years out for university and there has always been downturns like this one. What makes this one a little different is that a lot of the "low hanging fruit" has gone and there is thr advent of alternative sources of energy. There is a tipping point looming, but nobody is sure of when. I just need a few more years and then I will retire.
Price fixing? The Saudis are trying to put the American frackers out of business. It seems to be having an effect. One thing you might be interested to know, Knightstrike, is what is known as the "Big Crew Change". This is where half of those in the industry retire over the next few years. This will mean new young personnel will be needed to replace them. There may even be a shortage for a while. Many factors involved in future oil industry employment.
I read about that. Also, Russia too vying for that global foothold in the oil market. Then I await for that 'Big Crew Change.' Are you a FIFO (Fly-in/Fly-out)?
It didnt start with my post. There were several posts before mine that digressed from the original. I have just been made a scapegoat.
Keep on talking about the oil industry, gentlemen. I'm very curious. What about this shale oil? Is it really economically unviable?
Of course. As long as the high and mighty will permit it. One has to watch, spelling, grammar and thread topic consistency, otherwise there are heavy penalties.
We're already in a new thread. Please carry on. lol. Teach this lad the ins and outs of the oil and gas industry.
