Anyone any idea if we need to register our marriage in the UK? We were married in the Philippines earlier this year. It seems to me you don't but as usual we are getting conflicting information
I do know you're supposed to register the marriage with the Philippine Embassy if you are married outside the Philippines, we did that last week whilst renewing the loved ones passport.
Registering overseas marriages in the UK has now stopped. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/...istry-service-discontinued-for-overseas-brits
Yes, thats what I thought, although you could interpret that as Brits married abroad AND living abroad it really isn't clear, that couple with the girls gossiping...
The inability to record the marriage abroad probably won't affect you until you die and only then if you're in receipt of a pension. Widow's Benefit is only paid to those whose marriages are recorded in the UK and the fact that this is no longer possible, means our spouses will be denied that benefit. Embassies are doing less and less for citizens abroad.
Its not a problem, The Widows Benefit now called Bereavement Allowance is a single lump sum that is reliant on the deceased having paid sufficient National Insurance. You just have to provide original marriage certificate (which in reality is the NSO marriage cert ). https://www.gov.uk/bereavement-allowance The General Register Office, was somewhere that the marriage certificate could be lodged in the UK for safe keeping, it didn't make anything officially recognized. As the GRO no longer accepts the deposit of overseas marriage certificates, its now the responsibility of the individuals for safe keeping of the marriage certificate. If you are unfortunate to lose the cert, then presently is can be ordered online and sent from the Philippines to the UK.
Can be ordered from here https://www.ecensus.com.ph/Default.aspx I recall a member on BF has used this service previously.
