Last night we applied for an appointment at the Manchester Portugese Consulate.

    The routine was as follows:

1] Go online and access the online set of questions as in earlier posting above.

    http://www.secomunidades.pt/vistos/...ontent&view=article&id=168&Itemid=147&lang=pt

These questions paraphrase the questions on the Schengen Visa application form. Fill out the detail.

2] Select a date and time for your appointment / interview (no earlier than 3 months before your date of travel).

    3] Submit the forms online.

4] At this point their website creates a copy of the Schengen Visa application form, duly filled out with your details on it and at the top confirmation of your appointment date and time. In our case it is the end of April, for a holiday in June.

5] An email is then also sent to you to confirm the appointment date and time.

NB It would seem that questions 31 + 33 were mandatory. We couldn't submit the application for the appointment unless we entered detail about the holiday accommodation. Fortunately we had already put down a deposit.

    No fee is charged.

For the appointment we have to take all the paperwork / docs that they require.

Drove to the ferry port in Douglas. Return trip for me, Mrs Ash and baby Ash to Liverpool with car - about 135 quid round trip. Then a drive to Manchester. All to visit the Portugese Consulate in Portland Street (hasn't Piccadilly Gardens changed somewhat!!). Had a fixed appointment at 4pm but they saw us early. The officer took all the pertinent docs. We almost willed him to issue the Schengen Visa there and then and at one point we thought he would, but no, we have to wait about 12 days.

He gave us what appeared to be a receipt of somekind. Couldn't read the words as they were in Porks n Cheese but the officer translated and there was a fee of some 52 Euros but it was waived owing to Mrs Ash being married to me. So the final fee was zero though I had to pay £7 for a prepaid Special Delivery envelope.

So we wait in hope and expectation.

Good day out though. A trip to Manchester for me and Mrs Ash is like Pop65z and his wife having a trip to Cebu!

Something worth noting, for anyone wishing to get a Schengen Visa for Portugal is that they seem to insist on proof that the wife is travelling with the hubby. This was okay in our case as I had made a booking (put a deposit down on a package holiday) so I simply gave them a copy of the booking detail but if I hadn't done that then I would have had to quote the Schengen rules at them and I don't know how we would have got on with that.

Both Easyjet at Gatwick and Portugese Immigration at Faro checked my wife's Schenegen visa quite thoroughly. It seems certain that there would be no way for her to get into Portugal without it.
