Well at least St Georges day will get mentioned here. It certainly doesn't get mentioned in the British Media. According to Wikipedia it's also celebrated in:- Surely there are celebrations somewhere
'Cry God for Harry, England, and Saint George!' My wife reminded me about this as she had learned it for her Life in the UK Test.
The Cross of St George having been used by parties on the Right of British politics for quite a while, and being associated with raucous support for the England football team ("Hope springs eternal in the human breast...") people have become cautious about celebrating St George's Day in many parts of England, Personally I will be celebrating the 449th anniversary of the birth of William Shakespeare. I remember the national celebration of his 400th anniversary and I hope we do something for his 450th
I think the far rights actions in connection with the England flag and now the EDL makes it difficult for a lot of people to get behind the flag and celebrate St George's day.. That said, I do enjoy the World Cup when we get the chance to wave the flag without even a hint of "you're a racist" coming our way!
Personally, I don't think the average Brit is thinking about any connections with far right or EDL when it comes to St Georges Day. I think it's total apathy and a lack of any tradition to celebrate. Time to join the majority and just get on with life without a second thought to it, I think. I always celebrate St Patricks in some way. Always have done thanks to my old nan who revelled in it. I even spent a week in New York one year just to enjoy the atmosphere and drink green beer. Now that was a weekend to remember. Wish I could recall it all. When I'm finally located in the Philippines I think i'll invent a fiesta for 23 April based on dragons, drinking and lechon  I'll call it St Jorges day
I don't think it is a case of not caring or apathy. We just don't see a point in making a big thing of it. By the way. On a slightly different tack, I see our Scottish neighbours havent thought too clearly of what they want to do about currency once they have gone their seperate way. Quite funny, the news today on devolution.
