The language test system as another example, is poorly thought out but as things stand we have to do the best under the circumstances. Where my other half is employed she is one of few who are not from this country that can speak any English. Many at her workplace cannot speak any and there has been no English test for them. This of course is galling but it is the current system and one where she has had to grit her teeth and get on with it.

The Life in the UK test appears to be updated every year - certainly there was a 2017 edition which has now been superseded by the 2018 one. Whoever compiled the report deliberately or otherwise compared the contents of the 2013 edition, published before Thatcher's death, in the context of a much later date, possibly intending to deceive. This is a fake news story - "lies" may be a better description - confected by a well-known purveyor of such.

I trust you'll now acknowledge that your OP is based on misinformation - in that it was the test compiled for 2013 that was being scrutinised some four or five years after it was replaced (by the test for 2014).

Would care to provide examples of ambiguous and unanswerable questions asked by the test. Or are you simply parroting the Canary?

This video clip was released a few years ago, but within the content is a brief description and review of the test’s suitability for the purpose at that point in time. I wonder if the test and the content of the test is any better now than it was at that point in time. It has probably had a clean up on minor elements but overall it appears to have remained unchanged. I am sure a quick call to the right persons would clear that up.

During the question and answer session in the video there are some interesting points raised.

It is quite lengthy but does cover a lot of ground. If I recall correctly, they refer to the 3rd edition and am not 100% sure but the current edition is 3rd edition so despite being issued in 2013 the video would then be reasonably current.

The guy Thom Brooks featured in the video was tasked with reviewing the test and notably he himself is an immigrant to the UK and had to take the test in the form that it was in at the time.

Here is a bit more about Thom Brooks and his assessment of the test:

    https://www.dur.ac.uk/news/newsitem/?itemno=18072

“This report does not conclude that the test should be abandoned. I recommend that the Life in the UK test should be reformed so that it is no longer impractical, inconsistent, trivial, gender imbalanced, outdated and ineffective. The test has become an integral part of immigration policy although it has evaded sufficiently close scrutiny.”

    Thom Brooks.

“Brooks is an immigration law and policy specialist with wide-ranging expertise. He is the leading expert on Britain’s the Life in the UK citizenship test and the author of the only comprehensive report examining it (brief, report, video). This is frequently highlighted in Parliamentary debates and noted in the media worldwide. His latest book is Becoming British and published last year by Biteback. Brooks contributed to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Social Integration’s report into the integration of immigrants, especially on issues of EU free movement restrictions, improving the UK citizenship test and integration strategy.”

I gave TSO a call this morning and was informed that the 3rd edition of the “Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents, 3rd Edition“ has not changed in the underlying detail since 2013. Hence the 3rd edition is still being issued.

I was informed that recent changes in the U.K. since 2013 have not been added to the handbook detail and so for example Brexit related material has not been included.
