Moment the CN Tower was zapped in a storm that hit city with 1,000 bolts every two minutes Source:- http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ty-1-000-bolts-minutes.html?ito=feeds-newsxml
Thought it was a really great shot. I wonder how he did it. I always tried to get some really great lightning shots and never achieved what I wanted. Spent hours in some scary storms, and got very wet.
I love lightning photo's the normal technique is the treat the lightning as a flash blub which is what it basically is. You set up for a long exposure and hope that something goes off in those few seconds, usually small f number low ISO and long shutter to get the amount of time you need to keep the shutter open. It's a tricky balance as the lightning can overexpose your shot but digital makes it fairly easy to correct for that. Of course the (cheat) cheap and cheerful way to do this is to switch your DLSR to video mode and then pick a frame you don't always get the quality that way though, but on the more modern cams that have full HD you can get 1920x1080 which is not bad. (I have never had and don't want video on a DSLR ) If you are doing it the high quality stills way then you might also want to try a neutral density filter to allow you to make a longer exposure. While trying to find the very few (really bad ) lightning photos that I have, I got distracted and started reprocessing some old shots of Manila bay from 2005, I will post some of them on another thread here PS that's a nice shot you found Peter but I have seen some truly awesome ones, I spent a little time trying to find a few tonight I will post links shortly.
Not mine follow the Flickr links to see the originals, just a few that I like but I wish I could find the truly awesome ones I remember seeing in the last couple of years. You might need to use the scroll bar at the bottom of the last photo to see these properly as they are a bit wide or click on the pictures and go to the original.
