That`s a lot of years ,so I bow to your vast experience!!
My first mistake was giving my guppies new tank mates.. Tiger barbs. Oops.
I`m designing a completely new type of tank that I have never seen the like`s of,even on Google. It has a 4" bottom drain and is loosely based on a aquaponic waste collection system which my Koi pond here has..
Once I have finalized the drawing I will run it past you. I`d be interested in your thoughts.
I have just discovered though that I will have to look around for a water chiller to maintain temps if I want to keep live rock and inverts.

be very careful of that bottom drain in a tank--mate-----you mean you will be relying on a powerful pump to return the water back up into the tank ? if theres a power failure--your tank would empty itself in seconds !

The 4" pipe is moulded into the base (not glass) which slopes either end at 45 degree angles.. The Pipe goes down to floor level and up to tank water level (or just below) and then back down via u bend and then up again to tank water level so it can never flood (water gravity level).. The first filter and powerhead fits into the end of the pipe run at the top.
The water fed back into tank via power head will run into an overhead trickle filter that is the length of the tank..
Both The U bends are waste settlement areas at floor level and will be fitted with a tap for daily waste collection.
I know this system will work well and I really should patent the drawing when I get it finished..
You will get a better understanding once I post a picture for your inspection!

I just had a look on Google images.. That system seems to use a lot of sand.. Mine has absolutely no substrate..
I`ll do more research though as that stuff interests me.
