"The chairman of the UK Independence Party, Steve Crowther, has said UKIP MEPs should not use the phrase "Bongo Bongo Land" again.

Godfrey Bloom had used it to describe countries receiving government aid.

Mr Crowther said the phrase should not have been used and was "lazy" and "old-fashioned"."

Just goes to show that UKIP are a bunch of fruitcakes after all, and why people support these Little Englanders is beyond me.

Yep, I think the guy showed his and his parties true colours. And they know it. He dropped a clanger.

    Is that a gaffe?

It seems to be a perfectly reasonable consideration for a small business man,
especially with all the social requirements imposed on the employer these days.

A lot of what the UKIP people say makes perfect sense. ;)

We should put that question to our female counterparts who form a large chunk of the electorate....

Well, if you vote UKIP at least you know what you're getting!

After reading through this guys wikipedia entry I both like and dislike him. He is a bit of a fruitcake on some issues but then pretty firm and an honest bloke on the financial sector. I think some of his gaffes are simply because he comes from a time when this was the norm...

He is even an embarrasment to his own party, it would seem. :D

    Evidently he has apologised.

"Godfrey Bloom, a senior Ukip politician, has said sorry for any "genuine" offence caused by his use of the term "bongo bongo land", after pressure from Nigel Farage.

The MEP said he had apologised after being told by his party leader that the phrase could be seen as "disparaging" to foreigners."

    From Wikipedia:

    "On women's rights
A few weeks after being appointed to the European Parliament's Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality on 20 July 2004, Bloom told an interview that, "no self-respecting small businessman with a brain in the right place would ever employ a lady of child-bearing age." Around the same time, he said that "I just don't think [women] clean behind the fridge enough" and that "I am here to represent Yorkshire women who always have dinner on the table when you get home." Bloom told BBC Radio 4's Today that his comments were "said for fun" to illustrate a more serious point, that equal-rights legislation was in fact putting women out of work.

Bloom confessed that he used to visit brothels in Hong Kong, claiming that "terrified young women beaten into prostitution often from Eastern Europe [...] is only a very small aspect of the flesh trade", and concluded that "in short, most girls do it because they want to."

After inviting students from the University of Cambridge Women's Rugby Club to Brussels in 2004, he was accused of sexual harassment, making sexist comments and using offensive language during a dinner party. One student handed in a formal letter of protest to the President of the European Parliament, heavily criticising Bloom's behaviour. Bloom who sponsored the club with £3,000 a year, later admitted making misogynist comments but denied sexual harassment.

A dinosaur from another era that can't come to grips with nowadays barmy political correctness..........

I fully understand him, and like him and many others from the same generation, I feel frustrated by the fear of using the wrong kind of language, as "Free" spech, as it was once known as, is no more........

Nowadays, if one disagrees about anything or want to vent some opinions, they will be branded, homophobics, racists, bigots and whathave you...

So you think that the small businessman should employ people only because of his "social responsibility",
rather than using his judgement in an attempt to keep the business succesful and profitable.

    :)

OK for the female counterparts (large chunk):
So you think that the small businesswoman should employ people only because of her "social responsibility",

    :)

We are not talking about the bloated public sector here,
we are talking about a small business.

He is welcome to that brand of free speech, in the same way as the women of this country of child bearing age have a free vote.

Next he will be saying that no self respecting small businessmen would employ anyone over 16!

"In an extraordinary admission, the UK Independence Party politician has said that as a Hong Kong-based businessman he used to visit whorehouses as if he were going for a curry following an after-work drink.

"But in an article penned for the Brussels-based political magazine The Sprout, he claimed the amount of beer usually drunk by him and colleagues meant that visits were never consummated."

He must have been very well paid, in that case. When I was "a Hong Kong businessman" I certainly could not afford to "visit whorehouses as if one were going for a curry following an after-work drink". But then, he was in financial services...

I don't think that kind of statement will impress the female electorate. This along with his other history will alienate them.

Women on rigs? Now there's a topic!

Right or wrong, only his constituents can determine his re-election.

And it would be interesting to see if, after all this palaver, his share of the vote has increased or decreased, or if he is out on his ears altogether...;)

But one has to admit that the major parties are their own worst enemies at alienating their traditional and new prospective voters

Although I am sure Dave will disagree here. Small businessmen shouldn't be able to discriminate or employ only certain people because they think it suits their business.

If we had zero red tape and no employment laws the small business owners of the land would be employing teenagers for £1.50 an hour on zero hour contracts. And then this would be followed up by other small business owners such as... Tesco's. Then the right wing would be in a huff over how their hard earned money goes to supplement those skivers with those low paid jobs who haven't got 3 full time jobs and get their incomes topped up by benefits.

Can you see him or his party getting much of the female vote in the future? Presumably Mr Bloom would also like to be discussing votes for women......

I wonder what his daughters say to him if he has any?

    Godfrey Bloom
"UKIP MEP & International Man of Bigotry"

    A collection of his quotes:

    http://internationalmanofbigotry.tumblr.com/

    BTW:

This man that represents a party that wants to shut down immigration altogether including the spousal route (5 years * ) seemingly has 2 Kashmiri servants and a Polish wife!

*UKIP would introduce a five year freeze on immigration for permanent settlement (with some exceptions) until we regain control of our borders, put in effective immigration controls, and deal with the issue of illegal immigrants.

    :( <== Frown

If you employ a small business man to fit and decorate your new kitchen, should you have the right to select the best candidate for the job.

Or does that discriminate against the inexperienced workman, who:
    • has a bad reputation,
    • swears like a trooper,
    • is twice as expensive,
    • appears permanantly drunk,
    • smells rank,
    • and whom you judge to be a liability.

Instead we have too much red tape,
    the British economy is stifled,
and employers hold back on recruitment.

An employer who advertises a position at £30,000 p/a is not offering that position at that rate because of the employment laws.

Anyway enough politics, I am off out for a beer with the natives. :D
