A startup company has introduced their very first product called ZenMate. Whilst not strictly a VPN, since it is a Chrome browser extension, it does allow you to view websites which would otherwise be blocked because of your geographical location. It offers full encryption too.

It is better than an anonymous proxy, since they usually have issues on certain websites, especially email providers. I have not yet found a site that it does not work on. It won't filter out your adverts or provide any malware filtering; you will have to rely on other products for that.

Zenmate does no logging whatsoever and all the servers are network sharing devices, meaning that several users share the same IP address thereby obfuscating your real IP address. I am not sure if it avoids the infamous DNS leaks on Windows machines. If the Zenmate servers go down I am also not sure if your true IP address is then revealed and your anonymity lost, which is true for most VPNs.

ZenMate has servers in: London, New York, Frankfurt, Zurich and Kowloon so you should be able to watch the likes of BBC iPlayer, Hulu etc when you are in the Philippines.

It is incredibly simple to install and use, offering incredibly fast switching between servers and reliable. So, if you use Google Chrome, give it a try. It is especially good for Chromebooks, as Chromebooks still have serious issues with their built-in VPNs.

Being based on Chrome, it will function across all platforms where the Chrome browser is available - Windows, Android, Apple Mac, Apple iPhone, Chromebook and Linux. It can also be used on other Chromium-based browsers such as SRWare Iron, Comodo Dragon and Maxthon.

Data speeds are excellent and, during the initial phase, it is entirely free to use, providing unlimited data. But, after this initial phase, expect to pay if you want unlimited data, though there will always be a free option.

At home, I use a router with a built-in VPN Client, giving consistency across all platforms. Using ZenMate, it is now possible to achieve consistency across mobile platforms too. I still get pretty good speeds when using the router-based VPN and ZenMate together! And switching server locations with ZenMate is quicker and easier than delving into router settings!

I am also hoping it will give reliable logins to British Filipino, rather than blocking Zenmate's IP address. That may be a false hope of course, since the network sharing feature of ZenMate's servers means IP addresses are more likely to be blocked.

You can download from the Google Playstore, where it is one of the relatively few five star rated products...
