Why is Spam a luxury food in South Korea?

My wife loves this stuff. I have tried weaning her off it but to no avail....

"Spam has become a staple of South Korean life, and the country is now the biggest consumer of it outside the US.

Since Spam was first launched in the US before World War II, more than seven billion of these chunky little cans have rolled off production lines - like the ones at Spam's South Korean factory in Chuncheong Province.

My Mum used to make lovely (battered) spam fritters,
great served with Heinz baked beans.:like:

I far prefer corned beef to spam though.

OK - honestly now - is there anyone, married to, or for that matter living in sin with, a Filipina or a Filipino who does not have a couple of cans of Spam in a kitchen cupboard?

    No. Didn't think so. ;)

Spam has a special place in the hearts of any nation that was liberated by the Americans. It is the ultimate "comfort food" for Koreans and for Filipinos. With a dish containing Spam in front of you, you feel safe. And that's important.

My impression is that we British ate a lot more of it some 40 or so years ago, than we do now....

We certainly did! In fact it is no longer made at all in the UK; any Spam that you see on a supermarket shelf is imported!

(Yes, I am now thinking of Spam fritters...)

When my Missus gets the urge to partake of this delicacy I usually opt for some of that "raw" smoked salmon that she doesnt like lol
