The European Union will push Australia to clean up its petrol standards – which currently allow for dirtier fuel than India and China – as part of negotiations on a new free trade agreement.

As the EU and Australia prepare for the next round of FTA negotiations in October, Guardian Australia understands the issue of Australia’s poor fuel quality, which prevents the sale of a range of European vehicles with higher standard engines, has already been raised at a bureaucratic level as a “technical barrier to trade”.

Europe will also be using the EU-Australia free trade agreement to cement Australia’s support for emissions reduction targets agreed to under the Paris accord, with Europe flagging it wants the “respect and full implementation of the Paris agreement” underscored in the text of the agreement.

The thread is about climate change and strange as it may seem to you how to avoid this particular abyss is conected to how we collectively discourage the use of dirty tech (in trade deals for example) and avoid ever more damaging climatic events (like Dorian or the Amazon) Its also become evident that Politicians dont seem to be able politically to tell the truth or act in our interest (like it or not) A citizens Assembly gives them a way out of this impasse and take the Public with them and that would be the subject matter discussed on this thread if it was not full of Holocaust deniers (Make no mistake thats what we are talking about) not 5 million nor even 10,s of millions as in the last war but 6 billion and that means the vast majority of us and our loved ones.

    Tell the Truth

    Act Now

Bring together a Citizens Assemble to make recommendations based on the science

HOLY &%$% I recognise someone in the video I knew from 15 years ago. Wow. They've aged much better than I have!

In theory, a Citizen's Assembly as an advisory is a good idea. Yep. Absolutely. If we've got the House of Lords as a check, why not?

In practice, the way that society is now, I cannot see that such a forum would be seen as unbiased, an accurate cross-section of society in composition. There is a danger it could smack of being twee, middle-class twaddle. Whatever information they would be given would be derided as fanciful and unlikely, simply because it suits many to disregard what they are saying - even if their extremes don't come to pass. We can see that boat sinking in the current situation. However, I understand that I am lacking knowledge about how such an assembly would be run.

Surely it's better to focus on refining/escalating (if necessary) militant tactics and staying out of the actual political process, simply to avoid being contaminated and blamed if implementation of measures are peace-meal (which they always are)? Why can't the Extinction Rebellion make this advise without the weight of an official body round their necks?

I know very little about cars so I'd want to listen carefully to someone who's spent a lifetime fixing them if it broke down. Not some bloke who's got a Scalextric in his attic.

That wouldn't make the mechanic better than me. It's his job. I could get a second opinion, but when the overwhelming majority are saying something, well, it's on me.

    Same goes for doctors.

Isn't this all common sense or am I missing something? Or is this just a global conspiracy to lie to the UK? What's more likely?

While i agree we dont have the experience (yet) of such an assembly its not hard to find good results close to home (The Republic of Ireland on the abortion question for one

XR arnt a political movement in fact they make space for ALL to get this process to where it needs to be and for an assebly to hear the science and make recomendations on what to do beyond the political nonsence of staying as we are with our profligate and discrimatory (for the poor including the Fils) lifestyles that will destroy us :)

    Jill? Claire? hahaha

Poor Clare is nervous and I'm glad the other person backs her - but only to a point.

A bridge too far not to have children? Perhaps, but maybe that's where we are, sadly.
