My wife just phoned me, asking me to check her passport and visa because she has to take it to work tomorrow. Apparently them there foreigners what work there are getting checked for their eligibility to work.

    Which seems fine.

    But...

What if we were in the middle of a postal application for renewal? She might not be in possession of her passport for a few months then. That would put the cat amongst the pigeons.

Its good to see they are checking, more and more the UK Government is putting the onus on the employers to ensure that the people they are employing are entitled to work in the UK.

You don't have anything to worry about of course :)

I think she's expecting a load of police to come through the door waving batons. Been watching too much "UK Border Force", that's her trouble! :)

I agree, though, with regards to checks. Considering the amount of time, effort and money we've put into all this, nothing winds me up more than people trying to dodge the system.

I agree with you Graham, if we went the legal route then we expect everyone else to do the same, that's fair and just :)

They would go away and do the appropriate checks. I have seen on TV were they have actually caught genuine illegals but had to let them go on some technicality. In fact illegals try to hide their passports as that is the proof that immigration require in order to take the necessary steps.

It annoys me when you see them on TV being let go, all the illegals no full well not to be caught with their passports, without a passport they cannot be removed from the country.

That seems very difficult to police to me but I agree with it :)

The only problem with that is that it costs us the tax payer a small fortune to keep them behind bars for six months.

I just witnessed exactly that about three weeks ago at my local Indian restaurant :)

I've stopped watching both the Border Force and Police fly on the wall type programmes.

The rise in blood pressure I experience just isn't worth it when I see all the cheats, fraudsters and other crooks getting the customary slap on the wrist and sent on their way. No wonder this country is becoming a laughing stock/ magnet for criminals.

The Biometric Residence Permit may go some way to alleviating the problem or illegal immigration, illegal working and abuse of the public fund system. But those Border Force programmes show it is so easy for someone to lie about their nationality, immigration status and age and be let free on bail, only to disappear.
