Been getting these calls recently and today is the first time I've actually answered one. Basically,

Bloke calling "can I speak to a mr ??????? (a not even close version of my surname!!)
    Me "no"
Him "can I ask who I'm speaking to?"
Me "No. You called this number, don't you think that you should have an idea who is going to answer? What is this regarding?"
Him " I work for windows and this is the phone number registared to your router. From this we've determined that one of the computer users has a virus called a trojon on their computer"
    Me "ok"
Him "I need you to go to your computer and I'll give you some instructions and..........."
Me " Tell you what, remove this phone number from your data base, don't call again and try to find out who you're actually wanting to talk to in the future."
    Him "Ah ok si
    Me - hung up.

This smacks of a scam to me, do windows call people up now with a vested interest in the health of their laptops?

It will be a scam trying to call round to random people and get their computers infected with who knows what.

Put it this way, has Microsoft ever called you to let you know your computer needs a virus removing? No, never have and I doubt they ever will..

My guess is you would have installed a key logger if you had followed his advice, and if you had then bought anything online with a credit or debit card they would have rinsed it :(
