No he was being quite literal, it was and is required that one be obsequious in any dealings with the Bish.
Getting back to the looting. I did wonder if that was how that recently auctioned map of the Philippines ended up in Blighty.... http://www.philstar.com/headlines/2...ines-submit-300-year-old-map-un-case-vs-china
No, Jim. I have only been to Manila a couple of times and couldn't get out fast enough to the more relaxed places in Phils. Intramuros ("inside the walls") does look very interesting though. Maybe another time.
Yep everything else was called extramuros https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intramuros Manila has its history, Intramuros and the old pre WWII name 'Pearl of the Orient', I know you don't like the place but even today you can see a lot of history there. Corregidor the island guarding the entry to Manila Bay is also something not to be missed, you would not believe that somewhere so beautiful and unspoiled could exist only 30 miles from Roxas Boulevard out in the bay. Loaded with weapons, originally a Spanish fortress but it still fell to the Japs and MacArthur had to exit stage left in a hurry, he came back though as he promised he would. And of course these locations were the stage that the 1762 drama played out on too (I mean Intramuros)
I used to work in Intramuros. It is well worth while to visit Corregidor. But rather humiliating for a Brit, because the Yanks and the Filipinos hung on there, massively outnumbered, without support, for weeks, whilst we surrendered Singapore to a smaller force in a few days.
