Millar, who was in a five-man breakaway on the 226km race from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Annonay Davezieux, outsprinted Jean-Christopher Peraud.

The victory was the fourth by a Briton on this year's Tour after wins for Mark Cavendish, Chris Froome and Wiggins.

Team Sky's Wiggins finished in the peloton and leads by just over two minutes from team-mate Chris Froome.

Wiggins is aiming to become the first Briton to win the famous race.

Millar won the prologue on his Tour debut 12 years ago and last won a stage nine years ago.

The 35-year-old Scot said: "I was determined. In my head I just gave myself no options and was going to do whatever it took [to win the stage]."

This is a remarkable story for Team Sky and for British cycling.

It's a true team effort and testimony to the individual who work very hard in sticking to team orders.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Mark Cavendish.

I wonder if Bradly Wiggins could gain any advantage by shaving off those sideburns :D

Used to share a house with a housemate who was obeseesed with cycling! Was forced to watch the Tour de France and learn more about Lance Armstrong than I really cared to learn... :D

That said, it is a gruelling test of athletic ability that even casual observers must surely enjoy watching.

It's also very interesting to see the tactics and strategy unfold, much deeper and more intricate than tyre changes.
My daughter is a very active cycling competitor in the Philippines. She acted as marshall on a number of cycling events her in UK when she came over last year.

I still send plenty of cycling accessories to her.
