MPs from the three main political parties have said they believe cannabis will be legalisedin the UK within the next five to ten years.

Labour's Dave Lammy, Conservative Jonathan Djanogly and Sir Norman Lamb from the Liberal Democrats visited a cannabis factory in Canada for a BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat documentary, where they said gave their opinions on the drug.

As it stands, cannabis is illegal in the UK, but it remains the country's most popular drug, with 30 percent of adults saying they have tried the drug at least once, according to recent figures.
Documentary makers from Legalising Weed - Canada's Storyflew the MPs over to Canada where cannabis is legal for recreational use.

During the trip Lammy said his opinion has shifted 'significantly' and that he now backs legalisation.

So how many millions have been wasted on policing it in the past.... and on all the research that supposedly suggested that smoking the stuff long-term could cause paranoid whatever it's called.... not to mention leading on to 'harder' drugs ?

AND...since when did smoking ANYTHING not do you harm, anyway ?

Added to that, the stuff stinks ... as often do the gormless-looking people who use it.

my last address was a penthouse apartment in a purpose built block of flats. i got the benefit of choking smoke from several other tenants smoking this junk and it found its way up into the loft above my flat--and in through the ventilation system. complaints to the management were ignored.
i think drug related crime would almost disappear if addicts could register with a GP and get free supplies for their own use.

So when you say "benefit" do you mean all that choking exposure at least gave you a nice buzz?

i dont mind a faint smell of cannabis but this was beyond ridiculous.

i couldnt care less if people want to smoke--pot or plain tobacco---but not when it fouls the air i have to breathe.
most people i see using it--openly--are either gangs of teenagers or worn out low life pre-corpses waiting for their turn to burn.

Cannabis (or the active ingredient THC) is not addictive, when the dealers cut it with opiates or with other drugs then it becomes addictive, in addition when mixed with tobacco to allow it to be smoked the tobacco is addictive.

THC in large quantities can and does cause psychosis in susceptible individuals.

The only reason it is seen as a gateway drug is because the people buying it are dealing with criminals who sell plenty of other drugs that are addictive and being involved in that kind of circle increases the risk of someone giving other drugs a try.

A lot of drug related crime would vanish if Cannabis was legalised, some people would get damaged by it but the percentage of people that are damaged by THC is far smaller than the proportion of people that are horribly damaged by alcohol.

Biggest so called gateway drug most kids encounter are alcohol or tobacco through their parents, the gateway through cannabis is a convenient scapegoat myth.

Psychosis, I'll repeat what I stated a few years ago on this subject, it's about one in a thousand, those numbers go back to the 1970s, I am one of those one in a thousand as I suffered a CIP (Cannabis induced Psychosis) in 1976.

There is some evidence that the easy availability of highly concentrated THC in some varieties that are being sold on the street is increasing the numbers of people who suffer this way, I'll give you that.

But as for relative dangers compared to alcohol, well alcohol damages you in so many more ways, it will take longer than a CIP but it will do more damage overall.

There is pretty much no such thing as a THC overdose, beyond a certain point there is no additional affect, but it gets pretty unpleasant. Alcohol overdose on the other hand well I've had more than one friend die that way.

For me though my worst nightmare would be someone force feeding me Cannabis, I never want to go through that again.

The reason the figuers went up was because of the very strong indoor skunk which was a result of it being easier to grow at home rather than import I watched the effect in the 80,s when it was largly skunk or soap from a cement mixer in Holland

Former health minister took cannabis oil for BBC documentary

“It just demonstrates to me how ludicrous it is that we continue to criminalise people who use cannabis with all the disastrous consequences of prohibition, like extreme violence that goes with it always in the poorest communities, the billions of pounds going to organised crime on a plate and the criminalisation of young people. I wanted to demonstrate the approach we have at the moment is ludicrous and there is a much better evidence-based approach.”
