    Paul,

There is nothing remotely amusing about Whippy's post (#58) which is, on so many levels, insulting and offensive to both Filipino and western members alike. He has, after all, called you a "sex tourist" which not only negatively reflects upon you but your dear wife as well.

Please ban him without further ado. Permanently.

absolute garbage. This remark only shows that you don't know anything at all, about the Filipino labour market. I wouldn't have got the employment visa at all, and neither would any of the 4 other foreigners who work on that deck, together with about 80 Filipinos, if it was judged I was taking a job away from a Filipino. To get the job, I had to pass an aptitude test that only 1 in 30 native speaker applicants, have the ability to pass. Basically almost no native speakers, never mind Filipinos, have the ability to pass that aptitude test. Among Filipino applicants, it is 1 in 250.

note the remark about 'Filipino wages'. Markham thinks that Filipinos are like South African blacks. Foreigners often say that - as there is some distinction between what a Filipino earns, and what a foreigner earns when there is not and if there had been, I would have been shocked and have refused to accept higher wages just because I am white. The wages are high enough anyway - 10 times what they pay in a Filipino Jollibee. In UK terms, compared to the earnings of everybody else, the job pays about £70 an hour, which is why the company gets about 1000 applications a week of which only about o.1% are successful.

and sorry Markham. Somebody that goes fishing online for a spouse, and then goes through with a vacation to the Philippines to make it happen, is a sex tourist. There is nothing wrong it. But a sex tourist is what they are.

I'm sorry , I must be missing something here .
Can you please elaborate why , when a guy meets a girl via a dating site , then goes to meet her exclusively, starts a monogamous relationship , that becomes a permanant relationship or subsequent marriage, deserves the title Sex Tourist ?

I was always under the impression, that title was reserved for people , who travelled abroad for the specific purpose of meeting others purely for sexual purposes , and without any intention of commitment or monogamy .

I think there will be quite a number of people on this forum , who have met their partner in the way that you describe, who will be insulted by your arrogant opinion .

Don't flatter yourself. I note that the company is forever advertising for "communications assistants" and if, as you say, only 1 in 250 Filipinos are suitably qualified and can pass all the assessment tests - one of which will be the ability to correctly repeat spoken communication for which a high degree of oral English is required - then the company might be able to convince DOLE and BoE to grant you a visa and permission to work. The reason Stellar has centres in Manila and Cebu is one of cost, nothing more or less. Labour costs are significantly lower in the Philippines than in almost all other English-speaking countries as are rents, taxes etc.

Do not presume to make assertions as to what I think: you are completely and utterly wrong.

£70 an hour is ten times the wage paid by Jollibee?!? What planet are you from? I told my wife of your claim and she burst out laughing. Jolibee pays nothing like £7 - almost Php 500 - an hour to its employees, they may get something approaching that amount for 2 or 3 days' work. MacDonalds pays a bit more but even so nowhere near that amount. And I do doubt that you were paid £70 a hour or anything like that amount. A software developer at that company's Manila office could expect a basic annual wage of Php 24,000 to Php 26,000, I really doubt you're any more valuable.

Unlike you, I went to Cebu for a holiday, pure and simple: the fact that I found love and the young lady who consented to become my wife there is purely incidental. She is insulted that you automatically assume she was "sex tourist fodder", just as, I'm sure, all our partners would be. I am equally sure that everyone here who met their partners online is outraged that you have the arrogance to refer to them as "sex tourists". Do not project your misogynistic proclivities on to us: you're no better than the Weinsteins of this world who sexually abuse women. At least Weinstein rewarded his targets with movie roles; all your conquests get is a ride on your motor, a bar of Cadbury's and a slap-up(?) meal at a local carinderia, not even an air-con room because you're so cheap.

I just reactivated a thread on a factual happening in the Philippines.

Did not expect world war 3 to erupt and god forbid if I posted anything slightly controversial

That said I do take insult in being called a sex tourist.

I joined this forum with the intention of learning from people who know more than me and if in my own way can help others then thats a bonus.

I find it very insulting when someone who knows nothing about me calls me something I am not.

    @Stellar

I think you owe me and the rest of the forum an apology.

He won't apologise, but I will. I am sorry that your thread has been hijacked by such an arrogant "know-it-all" sex abuser who looks down his nose at Filipinos and their country. It is people like him that Filipinas often ask to stay away from their online page; people they class as "scammers" because that is what they do.

Markham just doesn't get it. Jollibee Philippines pays 39 pesos an hour. And that is a good job too. Most people would love to have a job as good as that.

but caption callers in a call center 200 meters away from the Jollibee, whether they be foreigners or Filipinos, make 350 an hour. That is 9 times, what they pay in the Jollibee.

how much do they pay in UK Mcdonalds. £7.50? Multiply that by 9, and see what you get. THAT'S how much that job is worth to Filipinos. About £70 an hour, to a Brit.

That was why there was always a whole bunch of about 50 of them, many of them had pretty good jobs already, and who didn't work in a Jollibee, sitting around waiting to get interviewed in the reception area, every time any of us left the office area to take a break or for lunch.

ultimately I live and work alongside Filipinos as if they are my equals and I would not have it any other way.

    you don't.

sorry buddy. But until somebody comes up with the idea of a marriage or a 'monogamous relationship' that doesn't involve sex, then you're stuck with it.

You're a sex tourist. Perhaps you could call yourself a 'marriage tourist', or a 'monogamous relationship tourist' if it makes you feel
    any better.

it's you that's got it into your head that there's something wrong with it. I haven't.

    No need to apologise.

People should own up to what they do behind a keyboard. In the old days in a pub comments like that would leave you with a mashed up face and no friends.

But the internet allows a certain type of person to flourish without fear of penalty

The offending poster has the offer to apologise to people he doesnt know.

He could man up and do the right thing. Sometimes we all say things we dont mean. Or he could maintain his silence and a forum which on first impressions seems a pretty friendly place is so much poorer.

well what would you choose? 4 grand sterling income or more a month in the UK where the weather is good between April and September, or 50,000 pesos a month in the Philippines when the weather is crap? Bit of a no-brainer really.

and you have the sheer nerve to call me and not you, a sex tourist!

Never been on a dating site, well at least not since 1986 when my first daughter was born and her mother didn't want to marry me and I then tried joining a UK telephone dating agency, never went on a date though :) funnily enough she (my partner at the time) joined a dating agency about the same time and never found anyone either :) Web sites didn't exist then although bulletin boards (BB's) did but you had to be rich to own a computer and a modem in order to connect to them, I wasn't and I didn't :D

Markham has a point, is the bloke from Sheffield that meets a lassie from London on a dating site, or through an agency, a sex tourist because he goes to visit her in London and A leads to B?

We have one notable member here who has never visited the Philippines, yet he is married to a Filipino, we may have many others who have never been to the Philippines.

We have one British Filipino or Filipino Brit if you prefer who currently lives and works in the UK and I would be surprised if he is leading a celibate life in the UK, redheads beware :D

I wonder if he would think of himself as being a Filipino sex tourist :)

I know one man a member of this site who went to the Philippines several times while courting and who did it all the old fashioned way, he married and eventually brought his wife back to the UK, was he a sex tourist, sex was not part of the equation.

We have at least one quite wealthy Filipina member who has been interested in trying to meet someone nice in the UK, how would you define her?

You are attempting to justify your own lifestyle by broadening a term that you know is used in a pejorative manner and attempting to apply it to all and sundry in an effort to dilute the impact of the words, in effect you are justifying yourself by trying to say to us "I am no different from you", yet we don't see anyone else here with your lifestyle.

I have stated elsewhere on this site that I know British and European people that live and work in the Phils, I have been to their weddings and acted as a backup photographer and seen their relationships both blossom and sink, just like relationships everywhere.

I do not agree with your attempt to redefine "sex tourist" in terms so broad that the majority of people in either country would not recognise the definition.

It would appear that he has never experienced any relationship in his life with a woman that had any depth, hence the repetition of the word "sex".

anybody that strikes up an online 'relationship' with somebody by signing up to a dating website and then chatting to them for endless hours every day on Skype or Facebook etc, and then goes off to the other side of the world by plane to meet them, is a sex tourist. It is not like meeting a friend of your cousin's in the next town in the UK. It is international, sex tourism.

whether you end up marrying, doesn't alter that. It is sex tourism all the same.

however there is not anything wrong with it and I never have said that there was. On the contrary I applaud it. But it is sex tourism all the same. It's just a part of globalisation. Get used to it.

At today's middle market rate, that's £681.96 which I know is less than £4,000. But let's annualise the relative earnings. £680 x 12 is £8,160 whilst £4,000 x 6 months is £24,000. You tell me where you'd earn more money - hint: the answer is not in the Philippines!

"No brainer" - what an apt self-description!
