My iPad and iPhone are handling two separate google accounts and a hotmail account. 3 in all.

The more technology, more the confusion...:erm:

I have 1 home pc, and 1 laptop for when I am away on business, which I use when back at the hotels.

3 e-mail addresses, 1 main, and the other 2 to have junk re-directed to.

So, e-mails are not a priority for me, they can wait until I am ready, even if I can access them through my smart phone, anytime.

I find the notion of people carrying around a tablet all the time, wether iPad or anything else, totally ludicruous and pathetic, and just a need for such persons to be seen by others owning one...

I am not having a go at anybody, it is just my personal opinion.

My boss is the managing director of a global group of companies and simply has to have immediate access to email. He chooses the iPad to do that with. So not so geeky in his case. He isn't just posing like some people obviously do. He gets full mileage out of it.

But you are right about more technology more confusion. I have been used to Windows based systems all my life (well since their inception) and working with Mac desktops is like starting all over again. Mixing the two can be a nightmare too. Our Aberdeen office runs Windows systems and our local office runs Macs. Fortunately we have an IT guy that is familiar with working both but even he finds mixing the two quite challenging.

I will Skype our IT guy today and see what he says on your email predicament Mr Micawber.

Which part of North Lincoln, Howerd? My wife's Pinay friend lives in North Lincoln in a place called Goxhill. She is coming to visit us over Christmas. Her hubby is a drilling rig mechanic, so I am guessing it isnt you.:)

I must have conveyed the wrong impression....

I was referring to people that have no better use for the things, rather than hang around the various Starbucks, Costas, McDonalds, etc, scrounging the free wi-fi, to download expensive music, which in the end they don't own, and generally making a nuisance of themselves...
And my wife .............. Since a couple of her friends obtained one, she has been near enough a nightmare :blah:.... Wanting one...:erm:

I have full understanding for business people and the need for speed of communication and the versatility afforded to them by such small and sometime unobtrusive devices.

That's very kind of you. Thanks
    Would appreciate that.

I have to say that we have found our iPad invaluable and so very convenient when we're travelling around.
Carry a laptop is just too much hassle. Also the iPad 'fires up' immediately and is more than able to do all the stuff we need to do.
It can even double up as a camera, although I have to say it must look a little odd at times.

    Reply from our IT guy.
    1) iPhoe and iPad use IMAP and SMTP as their base like most other email systems.
    2) It's probably a configuration issue with the Windows desktop that you are using.
    3) He asked the following :

What email system are you using and also what email client?

I notice that you mentioned G Mail and ads. I never see any ads using G Mail.

    Now that's very interesting.

I'm with BT so the e-mail server is BT Yahoo! mail and is mail.btinternet.com
All incoming mail is POP3 (port 110)
All outgoing mail is SMTP (port 25)

BT do mention that the e-mail client must support SMTP authentication otherwise it will not be able to send BT Yahoo! Mail messages.

There's no mention of mixing POP3 and IMAP

Maybe I'll try to set up some paralell trials with compatible clients with set up's for incoming mail on both POP3 and IMAP.

Sorry to ask, but does that sound reasonable?

This is a very steep learning curve for me.

PS I've decide to adopt Gmail as part of my trials.
I'm really not getting on very well EmailTray, but I'll stick with just for the trials.
I'll be running all the clients for about 2-3 weeks but only the original Window Mail will be default.

    Thanks for the help

What client is being used to view email on the Windows desktop? Is it Internet Explorer?

I gather he believes it can be significant.

Not far from Goxhill. I sometimes go to the surgery there, if my local surgery has no appointments available. No I don't work on oil rigs. I have a disability which restricts the work I can do and I prefer to work from home anyway. I work for several mystery shopping companies and a lot of the work is done over the phone, but I also visit shops and banks (usually covertly)

Being self-employed, I can choose the jobs I want to do; if the job is beyond my physical capabilities I just don't do it. If the weather is icy I avoid all outside work as I simply cannot walk in those conditions.

Mystery shopping is not high paid work and most people could not make a living from it but telephone surveys make up the bulk of my income, at least from March-October each year and I can earn £200 week quite easily then. I have only once managed to break £300 in a week and that was back in March this year. In November-February I hardly earn anything, just a few pounds from mystery shopping and answering on-line surveys. This is why I am really worried about getting my fiancee into the country.

I am 61 now, so don't really want to start any new business, except maybe selling GOLD phone numbers on eBay.

If you use Google Apps for Business (paid version only) there is an option to turn off Gmail adverts. If you just have the free Gmail you can disabled adverts by installing an ad blocker such as Adblock or Adblock Plus

    Any news on this one?

The last question our IT guy asked was "What client is being used to view email on the Windows desktop?" He says once he gets the info he will give you settings etc.

He supports both Apple and Windows systems either separately or together and has no bias as such as he has to work with both.

The way I am set up here I do not lose any email to my desktop or to my iPad.

    Currently, I'm still having problems.
I received an e-mail from Amazon yesterday on the iPad, but not on my laptop

I currently running Windows Mail on a Vista OS laptop.

Also doing trials with EmailTray and Thunderbird.
Today I will include Gmail and Hotmail/Outlook

I've now taken to spending quite some time to log into each individual e-mail on the BT Yahoo Mail platform.

I do appreciate your interest and help John, thanks

Okay. So are you using Internet Explorer? Or Google Chrome or the like?

"What client is being used to view the email on the Windows Desktop? Internet explorer?"

    Quoting the reply....

"OK, well IE "should" enable the user to see all the emails. *It uses HTTP to view the emails and therefore there should not be any discrepancies. *I'm going to point out the obvious here, but my wife has done the same, so...
IE does not display ALL emails on the page, it only displays the first 25
At the top & bottom right of the screen there will be a link saying "Next", if you click on it it takes you to the next screen of 25 emails...
Like I said it sounds a bit obvious, but if you haven't looked for it...
    "

I kind of assume that the above isn't the cause, though...

    Something I overlooked.

I receive my hotmail on my iPhone and iPad and also on my windows based laptop. I show no signs of missing email.

As you know I was trialing a number of e-mail clients. This turned out to be a real 'dogs breakfast' and my e-mails got messed up even more.

I now decided the best approach is to trial just one client at a time and see what happens.
I'm concerned that I may have installed some OS / IE updates that are causing some conflicts somewhere.

After the Christmas period I may go for windows 8 and re-install the e-mail client and see how that goes.

    It's really odd.

I asked in the Apple shop today. The chap there said it could be a number of things, but suggested checking your desktop settings. Couldnt say which ones, of course.

You mentioned Kindle for iPad? Yes, we have had that for some time now. We downloaded a couple of "bringing up baby" books using it. Very quick too.
