I came across this by accident when searching for oldie songs for my five year old. I remember the song and Hair but didn’t expect the content of the video....

Nice views... but rubbish singers ! lol. That's ruined my memories of 'Hair'. Evidently the chart single was sung by a different crowd... or they were sober. :D

I saw the movie more than once. But also a stage version in Manchester. It had a strong association with the protests against the Vietnam war.

Yeah... what I would describe as 'my era'.
I never did see the show, but was pretty much enveloped in the 'scene' at that time, as I was living just off Kings Road , Chelsea, in those heady Flower Power/Psychedelia days of the late 60s/early 70s. :like:

Vietnam constantly on the radio and TV of course.

    Lake Taal's central caldera?

I passed lake Taal again the other week but I've never done the trip to the middle.

My sister had that album in the late 1960's and played it a lot when she was back in Scotland, she was in London studying Orthoptics from about 67 to 71 and saw lots of shows and many of the really big names live in small clubs, the Stones, Pink Floyd and so on.

I loved this album back then.

“When the moon is in the Seventh House
    And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars…”

Yes. Taal. What an awesome testimony to the power within the Earth.

Exactly. I remember it very well. I was working in Knightsbridge in 74/75

As Oss points out, the amount and quality of the music being churned out in that (golden) era was phenomenal.

I've seen Hair so many times! My parents took me as a kid and I developed a sort of life-time obsession for it.

There was a revival show in London a few years back and I went many times while I was working in London. It became my evening entertainment when staying away. "What shall I do this evening? I know. I'll go and see Hair again".

There was also a version on in Waterloo earlier this year, which I also went to see. I even have a little group of friends who are all Hair obsessives, and we meet up when the show is on.

There was a Filipino production in Manila last September - the week after I was in Manila! I just missed it. Next time - check what's on first before booking!

That's the original British cast. The whole point of it is that the singing is slightly shambolic. The chart versions of the songs were far too polished for my liking.

You do not appear to have retained the hairstyle to go with it? :D

Very true. I did have it at one time though.

    Peace on you! :D

So why the Manchester, England, England bit as Berger boards the plane? (Very poignant part of the movie.)

I don't really like the movie much. It completely changes everything from the stage show. Berger doesn't even go to Vietman in the stage show. Claude does.

In the show, when they introduce themselves, Claude talks in a bad "English" accent, pretending he's from Manchester because it's cool to be from England - only for someone to expose him and say "No he's not. He's from Queens". Then they sing the "Manchester, England" song.

I can see you are a bit of a purist. :D

It is so long ago. Looking it up there was a big gap between the release of the stage show and the release of the movie.

What does your partner / wife make of Hair? Mine has no interest but I think my daughter will turn out to be a 1970s hippy born in the wrong era. :D

I am. Totally! I think I spent most of the film going "No! No! No!" The story is wrong. The characterisations are all wrong - particularly in the case of Claude. I didn't like the music, which changed to a sort of disco beat half the time. I didn't like it at all!

My wife has enjoyed the show. We both enjoy going to shows and concerts anyway, so it kind of fits in with what we enjoy doing. My daughter has been a couple of times and enjoys it too. She's in the picture.

I suppose you remember the ITV programme, Aquarius?

It was an ITV production which also used the song as its theme tune and ran in the early to mid seventies. Arts based content. It even covered Hair at the time, in its reporting. I remember it chiefly because of the song.

    Russel Harty fronted it.
