Jan says, she phoned the NINO hotline number and they gave her an appointment in her case at 5 ways house, Birmingham, We attended the appointment with various documents, they asked her a few questions and filed her case.. within about 2 weeks she received a letter from the DWP, Newport, IOW informing her of her NINO, It may well be the case that they are not conducting these interviews due to Covid 19, there are still a lot of government departments are not doing face to face interviews.. it was about 2 months after her arrival that she got her NINO, sorry we cant be more helpful..

It was pre covid, and no there is no NINO on the back of the BRP card, employers usually will/cannot apply for a NINO, I would guess due to the fact that certain documents are required at the face to face interview, remember this number is yours and yours alone, and is used for everything ie PAYE, NI deductions, pension payments, sick pay, JSA, etc etc.. so i can understand why the NINO wont be supplied willy nilly.

Sounds like your wife attended "an evidence of identity" interview, not always requested.

John, Iv no idea if its always requested, but this leads me to believe it is standard in most cases..

What happens once I have applied for a National Insurance Number?
Once you’ve applied and this has been processed by the application line staff, you’ll be required to attend and interview at your local Jobcentre Plus. You should receive a letter from the Department for Work & Pensions detailing your interview place and time. At the interview, you will be asked questions about why exactly you require a National Insurance Number, and the circumstances that have lead to this. This is also the point at which you’ll be informed as to how long you may be required to wait for your National Insurance Number to be issued. At this interview, you will need to attend with the following (according to the UK Government website):

    • passport or identity card
    • residence permit
    • birth or adoption certificate
    • marriage or civil partnership certificate
    • driving licence
I can only say what our experience was, but of course ours was a Spouse visa whereas Davy was a Fiancee visa..

Paul I don't disagree that you speak from experience and I thought I would point out what the interview is called so it lessens the surprise for others if it is mentioned.
Davy s wife is now here on a spouse visa and that is what they will look at (as a fiancee you have no right to work)
Here is what I looked at the

If you have the right to work in the UK, you will need to call the National Insurance number application line on 0800 141 2075. Lines are open 8.00am to 6.00 pm Monday to Friday and are normally less busy before 9.00 am. They may require you to attend an 'Evidence of identity' interview.

I would suspect the use of the word may drop out and be replaced with will!

As a footnote my wife had to attend an interview but her daughter did not!!! Bizarre really.

My wife also had to do interview and think it took couple of months from interview until the number appeared in the post. They did give her a temporary format number to use until the number came through if required. Not real number but good enough I suspect to allow it to be linked when real number came through. Think it used date of birth for the numeric element and I'm guessing letters that would not normally be used.
