I lived/worked on the Costa del Sol for about 5 years and used to cringe when I saw gangs of Brits wandering around out of their minds down there... it didn't take me long to avoid going anywhere near the usual Tourist Spots..."

    I lived there too, John.
If I went out in the evening, I used to go to the Spanish bars or for a meal with English friends down there.
I was single in those days and did not meet a Spanish lady - they are very cautious meeting an Englishman, for obvious reasons, even though my spoken Spanish was not bad. The English have a bad reputation in the minds of the Spanish people. It seemed different away from the coast though as I was travelling through,

I use to own a bar/ restaurant in Malaga with a friend. I had to learn Spanish fast especially the money and other laws regarding owning a bar.
I too was single and wanted to stay that way despite meeting a Senorita which did not last.
Summer time was busy with tourist mainly young folk who would keep us busy till late in the morning then when the season ended we were left with the expats to tell us their long life stories. We had a pool team some Spanish locals played for us we gave them game time despite them being worse players than the Brits.
Then the Hotels nearby went all-inclusive, that was the time to sell and return to The UK.

For some strange reason, I never connected the all-inclusive hotels to the local bars, Jim.
Didn't the all-inclusive crowd wander over to the bars when the free drinks were stopped or did the free drinks go on until the early hours of the morning?

The hotel staff often told the all-inclusive customers that it was not safe outside the hotel and to stay in. Still, some came into our bar but there was a notable difference.
We use to go into the hotels and into the disco area and hand fliers out offering a free shot of liquor. Once they got in we entertained them with free pool and arrange poll games, my mate was a county pool player he could beat me with one arm tied behind his back.
