No doubt you are right there Max. But I know literally hundreds of Engineers that do not have it, many of them work as consultants, all qualified by first degree in Engineering and many with a Masters. There is a huge sector in the U.K. where chartership has not taken root.

When I established contact with UKNARIC I managed to get them to give me a rough idea of the likely outcome of paying them for making the comparison/assessment of my partners Filipino degree. Unfortunately, from what I told them the degree was likely to be comparable to an HND in the U.K. We could have gone ahead and paid them the money for them to make their assessment but decided it would be easier and cheaper for my partner to sit the English test for visa purposes. Which is what she did.

I recall them saying that confirmation would be required from her University to state that the degree was taught in English. This was one of the factors we considered i.e. the potentially added hassle involved in getting that done.

    Here are UKNARICS fees:

    https://www.naric.org.uk/naric/individuals/

English Language assessment is £50 which takes 10 to 15 days.

99% the degree was taught in English. I'm thinking I could just visit my Alma Mater when I go for holidays and try to request for a certificate.

Thanks for the additional info :)

On a tongue in cheek note, I have often wondered how the visa authorities and UKNARIC would deal with a Filipino who has a degree in English from a Filipino university. :D

My partner knows someone who has such a degree but they are not about to seek to settle in the U K anytime soon as far as we know - too many commitments in the Philippines.

This thread has given us inspiration to take up the Statement of Comparability option. Till now my partner has worked with no recognisable qualifications from the U.K. perspective. For £50 we shall go for the online approach and see what they say. If they state that it is actually equivalent to an HND then my partner will have something useful to help her move on in some form of employment (as oppose to no recognisable qualifications right now ). If better than that, then so much the better.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. I might be exempted from A2/B1 english requirement just by paying £50. And I could know my next move for UK employment.

    Again from their website:

“ 2. What is the difference between a Statement of Comparability and English Language Assessment?
The UK NARIC Statement of Comparability is an officially recognised document that confirms the recognition of an overseas qualification and its comparable level in the UK, irrespective of it being an academic, vocational or professional award. It does not contain any information on the medium of instruction.

The English Language Assessment assesses whether an individual's English language proficiency is equivalent to CEFR level A1, B1, B2 or C1, based on completion of academic qualifications taught in English. This service comments only on English proficiency and does not include information on the comparable level of the award. “

So we will go for the first option.

Roseanne commented that they will do both. Will call them soon and ask. But I think i'll go for the first option too.

Yes. They seem to do both. But they do not say if there is a discount if you have the two done simultaneously. If not then it is £100 plus VAT. Or so it seems.

I am going to phone them tomorrow.

Just phoned them. There was the usual preamble and then a wait. But some of the information in the preamble was useful. It is an 0871 number so there are extra charges depending on your phone tariff arrangements.

There is no discount if you have both the visa assessment and the comparability assessment done at the same time.

An online comparability assessment is a doddle online. Just need the degree certificate and transcript. Though we need to dig out the transcript. Photocopies suffice.

The degree cert and transcript needs to be in English which my partners is and no doubt most if not all Filipino degree docs are.

If the degree is considered to be comparable to a U.K. degree they state whether it be with or without honours but do not break the award down into the various classes.

Thank you so much! Will be doing online then. I'll go fo the comparability assessment. If that is comparable to UK degree then next I will apply for english assessment too. Let's say £120 for both, it wont hurt if i'll be exempted for english requirement for visa and i get to know my qualification here.

    Again thanks! :):like:

Okay. The website instructions are pretty good. There’s a good flow diagram to follow too.

She mentioned the blue and red option on the website, which seems to be the degree comparison on the one hand and the English assessment on the other. She also said something which I did not quite follow and in connection with that she mentioned that the U.K. governement was about to make a change. She seemed to be referring to the two options and having the two assessments carried out at the same time, but I wasn’t clear on that. She was helpful though.

Hmm, if the UK govt is about to make a change then I better wait for it. Might wait for a month or 2. Thanks! :like:

I used to work as an IT recruiter and didn't really bother much with checking out candidate's degrees. Given though that what I was recruiting for companies were experienced hires.

I once recruited a fellow Pinoy straight from Makati. He was a network engineer and recruited him for a short project. He graduated from La Salle.

I think if you have a lot of working experiences already and you had good accomplishments or were involved in projects, degrees don't matter much anymore.

    ------

Back to the OP, HR degree though is a bit trickier especially if you're going for a similar work. You will need to know employment laws here in the UK.

HR assistant roles or recruitment consultants are your best bet.
