Thought I'd give you guys an update to how I'm doing.. Today I had results from 3 of my sisters in terms of them being a match for a bone marrow transplant. One of my sisters isn't a match, but the other two are a match, one is probably a perfect 10/10 match (that's like twins) and the other is potentially a perfect 10/10 match but another test is needed. They also duplicate the test with new blood samples to make sure the results are the same. So, I've gone from hoping one of my sisters would be a 9/10 match to potentially having two who are 10/10 matches. And another sister whose results won't be in for a fortnight yet anyway. So, I will be having a bone marrow transplant at some point soon! I've also been told by my doctors they want to send me home by the weekend to continue my recovery from the first cycle of chemotherapy. That's usually for 2 to 3 weeks before returning to hospital to continue treatment. My blood results look good so far but they like to give me booster injections every day before I head home - which I'm having now.. So, hopefully I'll be home in a few days and as of right now everything is looking good.
I honestly know very little about such a process but it sounds like it is going better than anticipated, which is good news indeed.
Everything sounds to be going as well as it can be, I bet you're really looking forward to going home, I know I would be.
Hello Sean We have not heard any news from you for a while, but I think you are in hospital at the moment. I hope any news you have is good and that you have now had the bone marrow transplant.
He's just in the second course of Chemo at the moment, transplant will come later, he was looking good when I saw him a couple of weeks back.
Thanks for the kind words guys. Yes, I'm back in hospital and I've completed my second cycle of chemotherapy. As of right now I'm classed as neutropenic which means I have no immune system, which is the same as i had been just over a month ago. The chemo this time round was for only five days but was far more intense than the first cycle and can take a little longer to recover from. This is due to my AML being what's called complex cytogenics and requires more than chemo alone. My last bone marrow test showed I was in remission 2 weeks ago, but it's not a complete remission so I'm not out of the woods just yet. I will be having another cycle of chemo before the transplant (at least, not sure about a fourth) and weirdly I'm feeling good. I feel like I could go home, though I know I can't yet.. This last chemo cycle was tough whilst I was on it, but once they stopped the chemo I've felt a lot better. Internet is still sporadic and in the evening I can check out any emails and what not. Well, most emails... I'll probably be undergoing treatment all year now, but that's okay as it's what I need to do to get better.
