Life of Pi The Imitation Game (story of Alan Turing) Austin Powers - The Spy who Shagged Me : I like comedy and this whole series was great Wreck-It Ralph Tomorrowland - this was really good although I really don't like George Clooney Mr Nobody - watch this if you can it's a thought provoking well acted stunning piece of storytelling about a concept in physics and cosmology call the "collapse of the state vector" but it never mentions the science once it is sci-fi but does not feel too much like a sci-fi movie. Lord of the Rings : All of them were brilliant interpretations of the books. The Hobbit : All of these were great but probably stretched the material in the books a bit too far not sure it needed to be three movies, if you scaled Lord of The Rings the same way you would ahve needed 12 movies to tell that story Hidden Figures - mentioned this one before, great film, great subject, great acting and great story. You can see I am still quoting examples from my specific tastes but the fact is there was a lot of good stuff and there is probably a lot more that would be good to me if I would just watch things from outside my personal taste bubble. That's actually one of the reasons I loved being with Ana because we would go see things that I would never go to on my own and I very often really enjoyed the movies we went to see together, I'm very fond of cinema in the Philippines. Oh and that reminds me of a historical drama we went to see in SM Bacoor one time, a Philippine movie in Tagalog about the Spanish American war and the Filipino rebellion against the USA and that was a really really good film.
I can think of many that suit my interest and entertainment needs at the time. As my father once said to me “ sometimes you just want to escape, be entertained and let others do the work” a point @Aromulus touched on in an earlier post.
I suppose it is all about personal taste and that is hard to change. I prefer older movies which seemed to concentrate on stories rather than special effects. If we take Science Fiction out from the mix, there seems to be fewer newer movies with good storylines or engaging narratives. They appear to me to concentrate too much on special effects (some effects are good at times though) rather than storylines or good acting. It reminds me of the comment Dom once made: "Opinions are like arseholes - everyone has one".
It would appear he (dom) was wrong to quote that https://www.nbcnews.com/healthmain/holy-crap-chinese-dude-lived-55-years-without-anus-1c6437420
My father didn't have one after about the age of 58 when he had his colostomy, he had crohn's and that was a terrible disease to live with, they moved his stoma twice before had had lost so much of his large intestine that the stoma was really close to his lung. Me I now have (in one sense) two my plastic loop is doing it's job and has almost healed the second one in the sense that it no longer becomes septic. I suppose that fits me quite well as I can hold two differing opinions at the same time Wow this thread de-railed pretty suddenly
Oh... 'The Bucket List' with Freeman and Nicholson. I was reminded of it by your mention on Nicholson on that other thread Mike, that was a good fun movie, good story, good acting some pathos and came out 2007.
Here is a few of my top pics, no particular order Midnight express Ice cold in Alex Sully The Grey A few good men Men of Honour Forest Gump Green mile Shawshank Redemption Apollo 13 Boy in striped pyjamas The great escape 12 Angry men Saving private Ryan Unbroken Black hawk down Red Sea diving resort Bucket list and most recently Eye in the Sky (brilliant)
I can agree with a lot of those, I bought 'The great escape' on prime, Sully, Ice Cold in Alex, I have indeed watched most of your list and would not downvote any of them, I'd forgotten Apollo 13 shame on me that was 1995 but the zero gravity effects were not effects, that was real, they filmed the scenes inside a plane on a balistic trajectory they were in freefall which is what zero-g actually is and acting for a minute or so at a time, over and over again they had to go through climbing and decending in order to make that film. A good list John.
No that is not one I have seen, just looked it up, interesting synopsis and interesting Ottway's wife is named 'Ana', probably not something I would choose to watch but which I would probably enjoy if I did watch. I do like Neeson.
Memoirs of a Geisha - this was just wonderful, 2005, Ana and I went to see it back then. edit: and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon another great film.
Add to my list.............. The Kings Speech Sleepers 22nd July The Foreigner Captain Phillips The Hunt for Red October
