hello all. I am Yuri and I met my girlfriend Marian while working on the cruise ships. She is the most beautiful angel I've ever met.
We have been together for around 18 months but spent most of that time apart, after my contract finished I I visited her ship regularly for a period and then in July Iwent to her province in the Philippines and met her family, which was an incredible experience and one I wish to repeat many more times.
We have been fighting for a 6 month visit visa for around 6 months and finally we were blessed around 2 weeks ago.
Marian flies in on Monday to stay with me and my parents.
Does anyone have any advise for me on how to make her feel at home?

    1. Meet her with a warm winter coat, and take her to the Sales to choose herself a nice pair of boots and a coat, hat, scarf and gloves that she really likes...

    2. Turn up the Central Heating.

    3. Assure her that, before she goes home, the weather will be very different. ( She won't believe you, but do it anyway).

    4. Try to find some snow for her to experience.

    5. Find your local Asian supermarket that caters to Filipinos. (not all do!) This is important. Do it now!

    1. Don't forget to give her key/s of your house just in case she wanted to go outside and experience the place by herself (while you're at work).
    2. Teach her how to use the alarm and other appliances new to her.
    3. I agree with @Methersgate with all of the above

Thanks, I'll definitely take her to the sales, I've been holding off going for myself as I want to go together. She is already accustomed to the cold as we were on a constantly air conditioned ship stopping at Norway and Southampton amongst other destinations. But when we have been in Southampton she has shown a massive disliking for cold rain so a coat will definitely be on the shopping list ☺️

She has seen snow in Iceland already but I'm looking forward to showing her the moors.

I'll definitely find a supermarket that offers Filipino items.

    Thank you Methersgate

Welcome @YuriMarian and congrats on getting the visa. :)

I love this advice haha. I have a spare key of his house but I always forget to bring it with me so I always end up calling him and disturb him from work. Gosh, I think it's my age

Download as many Tagalog movies as you can find. Set her up a bookmark page on your computer where she can listen to Filipino radio stations or stream Filipino TV programmes.

Buy a rice cooker. A BIG rice cooker.

Thank you brom 27 and compello chris. That's an awesome idea to get her linked in to Filipino tv, (apart from the fact I'd have to sit through Filipino tv haha) do you know a website we can find it on?

This is obvious, but make sure you get her a UK phone and (separately!!) make sure that she can chat with her extended family on Skype, Viber, Messenger or whatever else she and they use.

Some people don't want to feel locked up and would want to roam around themselves. :D
    You're still young @Brom27!:p

If I may add @YuriMarian -- you might want your gf install an app called maps.me. Just a suggestion.
    https://itunes.apple.com/ph/app/maps.me-offline-map-navigation/id510623322?mt=8

This free app will help her get directions and shows her current location via GPS. Also, this works offline as long as she download the "map" of a place beforehand.

For Pinoy series/movies and other asian shows, she can find some here:

Funnily enough Marian is adamant that she doesn't want to eat rice while she is here as she wants to lose a bit of weight (she doesn't need to at all).
I'm teasing her over how long her rice abstinence will last

I hope it lasts longer than my New Year declaration not to eat bacon, sausages or black pudding lasted.

    (48 hours)

And 3 kinds of eggs, beans, fried mushrooms, fried bread, Hogs Pudding, White Pudding, bubble and squeak, hash browns, fried tomato and toast.... Come on Campbellochris, if you're gonna do something, do it properly haha..... So odds on Marian losing weight are around 50000/1

I see your game buster! You're just trying to tempt me with additional breakfast delicacies. But it ain't gonna work!

My breakfast most days consists of a sausage, one bacon, two toast, a slice of black pudding, a hash brown, some mushrooms and my Derby County mug, brimmed with PG Tips.

Melody's first lesson on arriving in Spain was how to cook an English breakfast. And now, every morning, my eyes open to my lovely wife, standing there with my breakfast tray so that I can eat it in bed, because life has no greater luxury than breakfast in bed. This is why your temptation won't work Yuri. I have to think of my wife, and I don't want her biceps bulging as she carries in my tray in the morning.

It would be a complete waste of time asking a Spanish wife to do it because, according to the Spanish if it isn't Spanish food, it is utterly inedible, and they will endeavour to make it inedible in whatever way possible. Eggs surfing across the plate on a wave of olive oil, bacon with bones in it, sausages oozing paprika and soggy morcilla - (the Spanish version of black pudding).

Can you imagine saying to an English woman that you want breakfast served in bed whenever possible? Stiletto heel to the left temple and a distancing order are two possible consequences.

May God Bless Pinays Bearing Breakfast!

Haha, I think you've done well there ☺️, although I was gonna suggest that a second rate breakfast was befitting go a fan of a second rate club , but I don't have much say in such matters when I have to watch conference football these days .

While we were on the ships we had egg and bacon. In the mess and she always put rice with hers, it still baffles me haha. I did show her how to make scrambled egg with bacon in while in the Philippines but that was due to the lack of fry up ingredients available.

My wife finds herself surrounded by white whales, and puts this down to the diet.

A relatively recent discovery has been the Petite section at Next...
