My centre of life for the past 35 years has been Dubai and from later this year my Centre of Life will be Philippines. That doesn't mean that I will never visit UK to see family and friends, even if a lot of them are also settled overseas. In fact I have a reunion planned in UK in August with some old school friends from 1966. You can never forget your ties to your home country no matter where you choose to make your Centre of Life for a particular period of time.

the UK is her country now!----her choice.

not able to fly long distances.
really no wish to visit the place. nothing ive seen or read online would tempt me over there.---even if i was a single guy.
most of her relatives are lining up to visit us!

Sorry don't agree. UK may be her centre of life but it is not her country. Philippines is her country, always will be. At some time in the future, if not now, she will feel the need to return if only for a visit and it would be great for her if you were to join her and share the experience. I have been out of UK for the past 45 years but it i still my country. I have no idea of your personal situation, but flying long distance is not as arduous as it used to be.

It is also paying respect to her and her culture in my mind but if he cannot fly, then that is a big problem.

USA just below UK don't believe that 4th and 5th from bottom. USA is one of the worse country's for gun incidents, for first world countries.

Also I think that is old and don't mention bombs, look what has happened in London and Manchester recently.

Not talking about just kidnapping you have a short memory look what just happened in London and Manchester and it's going to get a lot worse.

Jim it's not a ranking, the countries are organised in alphabetical order, the list shows the USA rate of 10.54 deaths per 100,000 people or 105 deaths per million people which is a total of about 37,000 gun related deaths per annum, which seems a little overstated as other sources put the USA at about 14000 gun related homicides per annum.

If on the other hand the list is right then the deaths per 100,000 are comparable between the Philippines at 8.9 and the USA at 10.54 the UK number at 0.23 is 30 times smaller.

What are you basing this on?

In the Philippines recently we have had
    1) A city under siege
    2) A Korean businessman kidnapped and killed for ransom by rogue members of the police force
    3) Any where between 3000 and 13000 people dead as a result of the drugs war
    4) A bombing in Davao City
    5) A third of the country under martial law
    6) A presidential convoy ambushed
    7) A person shot during a mugging

That's just off the top of my head. Someone posted that the U.K. is more dangerous. What are people basing these claims on, because none of it seems particularly scientific to me.

Where is the evidence to suggest things are going to get worse in the U.K. How many people have died in the U.K. as a result of terrorism on the last 10 years? How does that compare to the 1970s or 1980s?

As @oss pointed out its not a ranking the figures seem quite clear. If you want to believe the UK is worse then that's fine. I will differ.

You're comparing apples and oranges - the Philippines has always been a pretty violent place whereas Britain by and large has been much less so. However in Britain in recent months, there've been two terrorist attacks in London, one in Manchester, an increase in racially-aggravated crime, drive-by muggings and attacks on scooters. There's also been a marked increase in acid throwing - acid is the new weapon of choice, it's cheap and easy to obtain and can be carried quite legally.

It's not me making the comparison. Others here are stating that the U.K. is worse or more dangerous than the Philippines. I don't think we can even compare the U.K. with the US because the two countries have many differences, not least the constitutional right to bear arms, and the availability of those weapons.

Never said that UK is more dangerous than Philippines. I said..........."there is no doubting that UK is becoming a much more dangerous place to live. Reading about the recent wave of acid throwing incidents, it's pretty scary."
If you don't believe that UK is becoming a more dangerous place to live than it used to be, I guess you don't live in London or Manchester.

Ok, so I have misinterpreted something along the way but it seems clear that people are using rare occurrences in the U.K. to temper down the rare occurrences in the Philippines. Why else mention it in this thread?

Which brings me back to the U.K. Is it really more dangerous? Hungerford, Dunblane, IRA, football hooliganism. I guess it is down to perception. It's less dangerous than the 80s when vandalism and teenage gang culture was higher.

If UK can't control her borders and Europe won't close hers or nobody can control illegal immigrants from coming over then I can see a big problem, not just UK most of Europe. ISIS could easily mingle in, who would know any difference.

If you read the Daily Mail, we haven't had control of our borders for 20 years or more. Terrorist attacks are less frequent than the 70s or 80s. I don't think there is much to fear here at all, but then I am not taken in by the fear mongers in the tabloid media.

All I can say is, I wish I had some of what some members here seem to be smoking. The UK is statistically pretty safe as countries go. So are its cities. London and Manchester are safe compared to many truly dangerous cities in the world. I lived in New York for a decade. You try walking around brownsville or canarsie in Brooklyn or areas of harlem or the bronx and then come back and say Manchester is dangerous. You have no idea.
