This is precisely why I believe that this is a high-risk strategy for May and the Tories. The electorate do punish governments that call too many elections and there are local and mayoral elections in May. There's a real danger that Brexiters will be in punishment mode or too complacent to turn out whilst those against Brexit will be keen to overturn last year's referendum result.

Momentum's take-over of the Labour Party is at an advanced stage and Corbyn's survival as assured. Too late for Blair to start his proposed pro-EU centrist party.

As is well known, I only agree with Mark on alternate Thursdays when there is an "r" in the month, but I shall make an exception and agree here.

We are told that she had not informed the Cabinet. I find that hard to believe but certainly she sprang a surprise.

I think she will get the 2/3 majority because MPs will not want to vote "against giving the people a chance to choose". The majority will increase somewhat and (an important consideration for May) UKIP will be utterly smashed.

I also agree that Momentum (or, to give them their real name, "The Militant Tendency") have got their claws into Labour too deeply to be shaken off, and that Blair doesn't have enough time.

I think May will get away with it.

In the past two hours I have been staggered by the number of Labour voters who won't vote tactically for the LibDems "because of tuition fees", but who have forgiven Labour for Iraq.

I think that's because Blair has been blamed as an individual where as the Lib Dems have been blamed as a party, it will be well into the future before the Lib Dems are trusted again, they will pick up some remoaner votes in the forthcoming election but that's about it, they are generally not well supported.

You are too kind - but why break the habit of a lifetime?!!

I read that May spoke with the Queen yesterday and informed the Cabinet, whose meeting was longer than normal this morning.

I'm not as confident of a Tory victory as you, the Tory press and others here are. If we have learned anything from the past two years, it is not to assume that the status quo will persist.

I also wonder if all this - an election and Brexit - isn't rather perverse given that Trump, Putin and Kim Jong Un seem hell-bent on nuclear Armageddon.

He's probably better-dressed than the average Militant Tendency/Momentum activist that infests the Labour Party. And he is Diane Abbot's heart-throb.

I feel for JC I really do but come 9th June he will be clearing his desk, the Prime Minister calling the election will probably do Labour a favour in the long run.

If the election predictions come true then the new leader of the Labour party will have a lot of rebuilding to do, and a lot of seats to regain at the following General Election.

I personally would always expect an elderly Politian like JC to always wear a suit and tie, he looks especially scruffy when you can see his vest around his neck line when he has his shirt buttons undone.

    I'm old fashioned though :)

I think a lot of the overspending comes from the provision of the so called "battle bus" in the last election, local Tory candidates did not realise that it was coming out of their local budget.

We all know from previous expense scandals that we have more than one or two bent MPs, for me more of them should have been jailed. It really irks me when I read about it.

Isn't it strange that so many candidates didn't know? Some of them obviously l we otherwise there would be hundreds of MPs being investigated. I wonder how some of them missed the memo?

Looking into my crystal ball I foresee a Brexiteer/Remain backlash. May has fallen in the trap. :)

The pound has risen 2.2% against the dollar today. This is in the hope that a softer Brexit will happen.
