People were being murdered or lost their lives due to drugs on a larger scale, all over the Philippines on a daily basis. But those deaths were seldom ever reported and few cared. You - and others - have woken-up to this death toll because of Duterte's highly-publicised threats - first made long before he was elected - that he would tackle the drugs problem. But his crusade obviously offends your liberal sensibilities - well, too bad, it's obviously what the majority of Filipinos want: more Filipinos voted for Duterte to become President than for any other Philippine President in history.

Never mind the inconvenient fact that it was the illegal sellers of very cheap baby milk powder, illegally imported from China and bulked with powdered melamine that caused many deaths.

I feel no need to draw attention to the obvious.

Sison slams 'volatile' Duterte for scrapping ceasefire

MANILA - Communist leader Jose Ma. Sison on Saturday slammed President Rodrigo Duterte’s as “volatile” for revoking a government ceasefire before leftist rebels could reciprocate the truce.

Duterte announced the lifting of the ceasefire at 7 p.m., two hours after his deadline for the New People’s Army (NPA) expired. Sison said rebel fighters were planning to declare a ceasefire by 8 p.m., but it was unclear whether this would push through.

“Masyado namang volatile ang Presidente na bagong halal,” an incensed Sison told ANC by phone from the Utrecht, where he is on self-exile.

“Hindi pwedeng nag-uultimatum. Ang pinag-uusapan dito oras lang, araw. Kung lumamapas ng buwan, pwedeng may uminit ang ulo,” said the founding chairman of the Communist Party of the Philippines.

Duterte’s decision, Sison said, showed a “lack of prudence in something as sensitive and delicate as peace negotiations between two armed fighting sides.”

Why isn't he in exile with his buddies in N.Korea, or China ? :erm:

..and as they say, 'you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs'.

Of course Duterte will be upsetting a few people, if ANYTHING is going to make some worthwhile progress in the Phils.

Duterte orders drug-accused Mayor to surrender within 24 hours
    ABS-CBN News
    Posted at Aug 01 2016 06:06 PM | Updated as of Aug 01 2016 07:53

President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered a town mayor to surrender within 24 hours, or else face being shot on sight, a spokesman said.

Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said Duterte is demanding Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. and his son Kerwin Espinosa to immediately surrender, "on the grounds of drug-trafficking and coddling."

If both fail to surrender within 24 hours, an "order of 'shoot on sight' will be given if they resist and endanger the lives of arresting police officers," Abella said.

This comes days after Espinosa's bodyguards were arrested in a buy-bust operation in Barangay Benolho. Seized from the suspects were around 237 grams of suspected shabu worth about P1.9 million.

Suspects were identified as Jessie Ocarez, 34; and Marcelo Adorco, 40.
Also arrested were Jose Antipuesto, 36; Ernesto Dumalat, 20; and Jeffrey Pesquera, 39.

He means business: Duterte anti-drug campaign gets archbishop's nod.

President Rodrigo Duterte's all-out campaign against the drug menace has found a supporter in Lingayen-Dagupan archbishop emeritus Oscar Cruz.
Speaking to Radyo Veritas, Cruz said Duterte is serious about eliminating the drug menace especially after he named more than 150 public officials, law enforcers and magistrates who allegedly have links to narcotics syndicates.
The archbishop, however, said the release of the alleged drug list could bring much needed change.

"I don't know if there is any effect if there is killing here, killing there. Now that he has named names, maybe this is the change that will be different from the weeks of killing," he said.

Police confiscated an estimated P88-million worth of shabu from the house of Albuera, Leyte Mayor Ronald Espinosa, Sr. on Wednesday.

Armed with a search warrant, authorities swooped down on Espino's home in Sitio Tinago, Barangay Binolho in Albuera town at around 6 a.m.

Operatives found 11 kilograms of narcotics there. The raid also yielded 12 camouflage uniforms and various materials for homemade bombs.

Police also combed through Espinosa's house on Tuesday and found several high-powered firearms.

President Duterte named the mayor as a drug coddler on August 1.

Espinosa surrendered to the Philippine National Police (PNP) the following day and later admitted that his son, Ronald "Kerwin" Espinosa, is a top drug trafficker in Visayas.

I think Du31 is almost ready for the next equally important move to start moving this country out of the stone age and removing the Oligarchs enormous power via constitutional change.. They wont like this one little bit...
A truly amazing time to be here to witness this very important part of Philippine history.. I was here during the peoples revolution to ouster Marcos..This is far far bigger than that IMO.

PhilWeb shares plunge after Duterte targets oligarchs
    ABS-CBN News
    Posted at Aug 04 2016 03:43 PM | Updated as of Aug 04 2016 04:25 PM

MANILA – Shares of PhilWeb Corp. plunged on Thursday after President Rodrigo Duterte vowed to “destroy” oligarchs and singled out its chairman, Roberto Ongpin.

PhilWeb fell 49.8 percent to P7.12 earlier Thursday before closing 37 percent lower to P8.95 pesos, the stock’s biggest drop on record, according to Bloomberg.

The Philippine Stock Exchange Index gained 1.14 percent to 7,978.57.

Before his tirade on Wednesday, Duterte said in June that he would stop online gambling, PhilWeb’s main business. The state gambling regulator has since renewed the company’s license on a per-month basis.

“I think the last thing investors want is uncertainty or unpredictabiliy of regulations,” BPI Asset Management chief investment officer Smith Chua told ANC’s “Market Edge with Cathy Yang.”

PNP chief: Crime rate down 49%

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines – Amid an intensified anti-illegal drug campaign, the number of crimes recorded as of last month across the country dropped by about 49 percent compared to last year, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa said here Friday.
“This only goes to show that most of these crimes that are happening in our communities are drug-related. That’s why when we focused our resources and attention on the drug problem, crimes also dropped,” Dela Rosa said in a speech before hundreds of police officers at the police regional headquarters at Camp Alagar.

Time to properly sort out the drug problem in this country too... and the criminality associated with it. Too many 'cautions' and not enough belt round the ear-oles and bread and water in the clink for a while.

Might Duterte be stopped in his tracks?

The Philippines has vowed to investigate reports of a wave of extrajudicial killings, the government said Sunday, after Washington warned military aid to its Asian ally was dependent on respect for human rights.

According to media reports, nearly a thousand people have been killed since President Rodrigo Duterte won a landslide election victory in May largely on a pledge to kill tens of thousands of criminals.

The US embassy warned the Duterte government on Friday that millions of dollars of military aid alloted to the Philippines was tied to adherence to the rule of law, due process and respect for human rights.

I dont condone death by any government but supposedly the US utilise a justice system to ensure the correct person (again, supposedly) dies.
