There is apparently a bit of a security scare in that Windows 10 defaults to sharing your WiFi passwords with all your Outlook and Skype contacts and your FaceBook friends. Some Microsoft kiddie-koder thought that was a good idea!
There was a nice piece on Newsnight last night on Windows ten and an explanation that microsoft ,who only have 14% of the total market now,(90% of PC) are trying to have a cross platform system to compete with Android and Apple (to encourage app writers back to there fold) they also suggested waiting 6-8 months till the wrinkles are sorted if you have the free upgrade Here from 11:48 http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0643lvs/newsnight-29072015
Having read that the initial install of Windows 10 has to be done via upgrade (not clean install) I decided to clean install Windows 7 and then do the upgrade. Another alternative is to upgrade to Windows 10 and then install Windows 10 again via a clean upgrade. I think the first method allows for an easier downgrade but for one month only, when Windows 10 deletes windows.old. What I am not sure about is, if you downgrade, can you upgrade again to Windows 10, within the 365 day Window?
I like it, so far. Did IE still have client side vbscript good god I never new that While I hate javascript as an untyped mess of language I wouldn't want to use VBS in a browser, Microsoft are co-operating with google to create TypeScript which will fix the lack of type checking in JavaScript, it will still compile down to JavaScript but for development purposes it will make the programming more rigorous.
I'll let you Rat test labs try it out for 6 months..According to what you say,I`ll update..Or not. it has been a good strategy in the past!
Is that on your ThinkPad Rob? Surprised at that as I had no problems and yours is same generation as mine, different model but same generation.
Yep. I bought it refurb from Ebay so maybe it has a volume license? However, that shouldn't be a problem.
I've forgotten which OS you said it was is it Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate ? If it is Enterprise you will need to try to downgrade it, there is a tool that can do that I believe. Enterprise editions are not being upgraded, not sure about Volume Licences, I'll check later.
I not sure if a clean install will qualify as an upgrade? I did a clean install but only because I get all this stuff on my MSDN Subscription and have access to loads of keys.
I read somewhere it is possible to do a fresh install, don't MS issue a new serial key? edit: I think you have to do an upgrade first so the upgrade gets registered with MS. It makes sense thinking about it.
I'm getting Windows Update failing to upgrade to 10 as per attached pic. It is trying but I suspect it wont proceed because of the licensing issue. I will wait until Aug 1st as Howerd suggested. If not, I'll try the manual upgrade from the link provided in the GW10 pop up.
You have to do an upgrade first but once upgraded you can do a clean install. I decided to do a clean re-install of Windows 7 first and then upgrade. The other way is to upgrade, get the new licence key, un-install and then do a clean install with new licence key. But you then have a potential problem if you want to downgrade without the hassle of another clean re-install. Yes you get a new licence key based on your Windows 7 installation and hardware. Once the new licence key is generated you can then use if for subsequent re-installs. If you don't qualify for the free upgrade you can just clean install with a purchased licence - maybe very cheaply from oss?
