    Wow.

I never thought that I would see Englishmen calling for Firm Government from a Great Leader.

Our parents and grandparents fought a war to put a stop to that nonsense.

The point about Liberalism is that it is the opposite of "weak" or "widget washy". It expects people to stand up for themselves and make their own decisions.

You lot are just a bunch of sheep looking for a sheepdog to organise you.

And none of you has the intellect needed to read and understand JS Mill.

    Baaa!

"far right activists"? "abuse"? Exactly what mind-altering substances are you consuming? There are no far right activists here and certainly nobody has been abusive towards you, whereas you have accused us of racism. And I think you meant to write "outmatched" (rather than "overmatched") and you really shouldn't accuse anyone of "blandishment" since nobody is flattering you!

no. I meant overmatched and indeed blandishment does not always have to involve flattery. The sarcasm clearly evades you. As for abuse I only have to point you to the above remarks. I Really am tired of dealing with this sort of idiocy. Stick your pedantic BS far right opinions where the sun don't shine. Do you get me sweetheart?

I confess that I am not in the best of good humour.

Flight PR720 from Manila landed precisely on time. My middle son and I have been standing here in Arrivals for over an hour and a half waiting for the rest of our family to get to the head of the queue for Immigration, while the car park fee heads toward the stratosphere.

First of all, please note I said "strong, authoritarian leadership"; I did not say "dictatorship" which you imply in your second paragraph. I am utterly opposed to that concept.

Apart from the fact you need to turn-off your iPhone's auto-correct "feature" - "widget washy" indeed! - your definition of "liberalism" is somewhat removed from your party leader's - and I have to say, I prefer yours! "It expects people to stand up for themselves and make their own decisions", which is precisely what happened in June. Over 17 million people stood up for themselves and made the decision to leave the European Union but your leader, along with assorted misguided politicos from other parties, doesn't accept the result. Just as when France, Ireland and Denmark voted "No" on certain Treaties, they were told to try again and produce the "correct" verdict, so your leader wants another referendum. Arrogant or what?

Duterte apologizes to Jews on Hitler reference

MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday apologized to the Jewish community after he compared his war on drugs to that of Adolf Hitler killing the Jews during the Second World War.

In a speech during the opening ceremony of the 37th Masskara Festival in Bacolod City, Duterte said he never intended to offend the Jewish community, adding that he was merely reacting to thosecomparing him to Hitler.

"I would like to make it now, here and now, that there was never an intention on my part to derogate the memory of the six million Jews murdered by the Germans," Duterte said, explaining that his statement was in response to critics who have been comparing him to Hitler.

Duterte also said that although his comment had nothing to do with the Jews, he understands that it was a painful memory for the Jewish community.

"It's not actually that I said something wrong, but rather, I do not really want to tinker with the memory. Alam natin 'yan. So I apologize, profoundly and deeply, to the Jewish (community). It was never my intention but the problem was I was criticized using Hitler comparing to me. But I was very emphatic, sabi ko ang patayin ko, three million addict. It had nothing to do (with the Jews)," he said.

Duterte, however, reiterated that he was only apologizing to the Jewish community, and not to others who are criticizing his war on drugs.

"There was something really, a bad taste in the mouth, to say it. Pero 'yung Jewish community lang. Itong mga bobong abogado sa EU, pati sa human rights, ah, screw you. Sipain ko pa kayo," he said.

Duterte earlier said he'd be happy to slaughter three million drug addicts. "Hitler massacred 3 million Jews. There are 3 million drug addicts. I'd be happy to slaughter them," he said in a press conference following his arrival from an official visit to Vietnam Friday.

His comments triggered shock and anger among Jewish groups in the United States, adding to pressure on the U.S. government to take a tougher line with the Philippines leader.

DILG: Philippine jails congested by more than 500%

The congestion in Philippine jails is worsening with the increasing number of people being arrested amid the Duterte administration's war on drugs.
Speaking on ANC's "Talkback," Department of the Interior and Local Government undersecretary for public safety Jesus Hinlo said the rate of congestion in jails is increasing nationally, with current congestion estimated at around 507 percent.
"In a jail facility that could fit around 10 people based on international standards there are now 50 inmates being placed in that facility," Hinlo said.

I am somewhat bemused having read the report. The lady interviewed clearly states that she has no comparative data, so how can she claim numbers have risen? Regardless of that, I don't consider that Duterte can be held culpable - unless you're insinuating that he is/may be a client.

The figures for Davao are actually quite low when compared to other major cities such as Cebu, Manila and Angeles but that reflects the fact that Davao has far fewer sex-tourists and most of the users will be Filipino.

I was just struck that this report comes from Davao, which I have been given to understand is Paradise on Earth, under the enlightened rule of the Great Leader and his family.

    You're mischief-making, Andrew! :D

In fact, Duterte banned girlie bars from operating anywhere in the city some years ago precisely to tackle the prostitution problem: something that the mayors of Angeles, Cebu and Manila (and elsewhere) haven't done as maybe there is coin in it!

Well, yes I was! But I had read, somewhere, just the reverse - that he had expressly tolerated girlie bars. Despite Graham's asseverations, my interest in the subject is academic, but the burghers of Angeles might feel differently!
