I don't think so. I think he is trying to appeal to the lower middle class vote in the Philippines.

As in many countries, it is fashionable to be "anti-American"

Misinterpreted again?? If thats true, who is responsible?

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — President Rodrigo Duterte was not likening himself to Adolf Hitler. The President was just responding to critics who compared him to the Nazi leader because of the thousands of alleged drug suspects killed under his watch. This is how Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella clarified Duterte's latest round of controversial remarks — now gaining worldwide attention again.

Malacañang issued a clarification on Saturday following negative reactions from the international community and several news reports saying the President likened himself to the Nazi leader.

Abella said the President meant no harm, as he was just addressing the negative comparison people have made between him and Hitler.

"The President's reference to the slaughter was an oblique deflection of the way he has been pictured as a mass murderer, a Hitler, a label he rejects," he said in a statement posted on the Presidential Communications Operations Office Facebook page.

"We do not wish to diminish the profound loss of 6 million Jews in the Holocaust — that deep midnight of their story as a people," Abella added.

History counts the cost of Hitler's purges against "undesirables" at six million, the vast majority of whom were Jews.

That story isn't playing well here with the Maltese quite a few of whom can recall Hitler's siege of Malta which started on 11th June and lasted 2 years, 5 months, 1 week and 2 days (until 20th November, 1942). It seems that the OFW population here is relaxed about events back home.

Have a heart Andrew. It must be fun for some of our forum friends to live a colourful world where Brexit warnings were all rubbish, where Duterte is the hero of the masses and where Muslims should be (presumably) shot on sight. Akin to being permanently on strong, hallucinogenic drugs. So don't spoil the party. ;)

Keep the hallucinogens to yourself, Brexit is the correct choice.

And please don't attempt to stir up racial hatred, leave our muslim friends alone. :like:

And can you point me to a post where anyone on this forum has said that Jonnie boy?

I have noticed on many occasions that you just love to stir things up here on the forum.

What a complete load of patronising drivel you do write. The only person who has written "Muslims should be (presumably) shot on sight" is you.

If you have an ounce of decency you will apologise for your behaviour.

I wouldn't hang around waiting; it's just sniping between the trenches; no Big Show expected for a while yet.

A Light hearted remark. My use of the word presumably changes the meaning of the sentence and therefore is not implying that it is a direct quote. Of course no one said that. Be your age!

I regret if anyone was offended by it, but frankly I feel that those of the forum who are currently on their high horses claiming sham offense are often quite happy to make controversial remarks themselves.

No I don't love to stir things at all, and I believe that I more often than not submit helpful advice on immigration matters. If my posts are however being viewed through that prism then that's a shame, but I believe I can console myself with the thought that this is most likely a minority view.

You're going for the John McDonnell defence: it doesn't work for him, what makes you think it will work for you?

In case you haven't noticed, electorates around the globe have had enough of weak liberal leaders and have rejected liberalism, they want some structure in their lives and therefore are voting for strong, authoritarian leadership. That's what happened in 2015 when Cameron increased his party's majority; similarly in the Philippines, the liberals were ousted and the US may well follow suit. There are elections in Germany, France and Italy and right wingers may well hold the balance of power, if not seize control. Look what happened in Merkel's home state - the Nazi Party is resurgent there. And the National Front in France ....

You may not like these changes but that's no excuse to be patronising or insulting to those who may like the new order. Attack the message, not the messenger.

I couldn't agree more with Markham's post, the day of the Liberal is finished, dead and buried, not even worth talking about them, their soft, wimpy, misguided approach to life are not suitable for these times. Discipline is key.

The people who are opposed to DU30 and closer to home the Brexit result must remember that they are in a minority, the respective countries made their decisions and have to live with any consequences that come with the result.

I voted for brexit. That doesn't stop me being concerned about the effects. I also am concerned about the effects of duterte on his country. Frankly am not interested in arguing about politics with the resident group of far right activists. I realize that you don't like it when people don't agree with you, but in this instance I am afraid you are overmatched since no amount of blandishment and abuse will alter my viewpoint.
