I suffer from a little of the old white coat syndrome when I have my blood pressure checked at the doctors, twice now I've had to wear a 24 hour blood pressure monitor, really uncomfortable, inflates and takes your blood pressure every 30 minutes, cuff around my arm and a box strapped to my waist. both times they have found my BP to be normal. When I check my BP at home it is normal, I would advise anyone of a certain age (that's most of us here) to buy a BP monitor, they vary in price from about £50 to £150, the missus got one just like the doctor uses at the surgery for about £120, what the difference is between the different price ranges I don't know.
Just taken my blood pressure with my Omron blood pressure monitor, 143/91, which puts me in the high blood pressure range of the chart. And 15 minutes later 143/87, slightly higher than I expected. I recall being told that the Diastolic (bottom) number is more important than the Systolic (top) number, not certain how true that is.
Be careful with the fruit in smoothies etc. Because of the high natural sugar content in fruit you can end up putting weight on. We dilute ours half and half with water. I did read somewhere though that if you do a 80/20 in favour of veg to fruit in your smoothies that is really good. There is also a school of thought that high speed juicers etc due to friction, speed, heal actually start to break down the enzymes in fruits reducing their effectiveness. The drink also starts to go brown quickly. Take a look at low speed cold press / masticating juicers. Generally you get alot more out of the fruit / veg. When he talks his blood pressure goes up. It's normal for that to happen, apparently. Try it yourself and see.
Much better. The juice you get out of stuff is amazing. You can also put the peel through as well as it contains oils, not too much though as it is bitter. In theory you can use it to make pasta as well. They are a bit expensive but I've not regretted buying mine.
I'm only 47, but I've suffered high blood pressure for 10 years now. Its not a lifestyle thing - I've never smoked, rarely drink, I don't do the wacky baccy, I'm healthy weight (BMI 22), perfect cholesterol, very physical and active in my work, etc, etc, its just hereditary. I do suffer from various allergies - polyester being the main - apparently theres only 20 people in the whole of Wales diagnosed with a polyester allergy. So I have to wear cotton clothing all the time, or at least clothing with a high content of cotton. Wheat as well is something else I'm supposed to be allergic to. Such is life - it all seems to go downhill once you hit your forties.
It would have been worse, though, Rob, if you had been a boozer, a smoker and were a junk food eating couch potatato? Whats your opinion?
I was diagnosed with high BP when I had my medical for China. Doctor put me on meds, I almost totally cut out salt (except on my fish and chips), ate a lot more fruit and started walking A LOT. Had my BP checked again a few weeks later in China and it had dropped significantly to the 'safe zone.' I like a glass or two of scotch every night and I smoke like a chimney. What's my prognosis? On second thoughts, don't tell me!!! Al.
Oh, and BTW - when I was told I had high BP - the only other thing they found was a '1st degree AV block' which I believe is something to do with blood entering or leaving the heart. I was sent to a cardiologist who told me not to worry - he said that lots of people have it - and some are even BORN with it. However, he also said that if it remains 1st degree it's ok - but if it moves to 2nd or 3rd degree - then it starts to get serious. Sorry for the rather rambling addendum. Al.
When I was younger, I used drink a lot (as most of us did when we were younger) and have a few too many junk food meals, now I've cut right back, the body can't take it no more!
Yeah, its 2 tablets a day Mike - Perindopril 4mg & Cardioplen 5mg. I did try beta blockers and other bp medication, but none of them seemed to work/or a I had a bad allergic reaction. My doctor said that sometimes you have to try different combinations of bp medication before you find the right ones that work for you.
I suffered a heart attack 5 and a half years ago. I am on a daily cockatil of 6 pills, which I religiously consume after breakfast. The only thing I would object taking is Statins, but until the doc gives the go-ahead, I won't dare stop. Because of Statins, my weight has increased considerably, and there are some other side effects. Mt BP, in general has stabilised, and my cholesterol has gone down to 3.5. I am dieting......... But as soon as her indoors walks into the kitchen, I start putting weight on...
Same with me. Yes. I have to watch my sugar intake. I am not diabetic. But I have to keep added sugar out of my diet as my blood sugar goes shooting up. It was okay when I was young. But not any more.
Yesterday, mine was 150/107 which doesn't look good. I have a virus at the moment and hope it is causing this really high reading. I have got to go back to the doctors surgery twice next week to get my bp read. The diastolic (bottom) number was off the scale in the previous chart
