2 things really hack me off about all this. 1 facemasks to begin with--gov told everyone facemasks were of no use because--blah blah. now everyone has to use them if they want to use public transport. why werent they to be used from day one ? answer--because there werent enough available--and the nhs needed them . so why not say so ? 2 the elderly were discharged from hospitals early on because it was thought the beds were going to be needed for covid cases. the elderly patients were sent to care homes...but they werent tested for covid. results--speak for themselves. our nhs hospital tried to pressurise my wife ( registered manager of a home ) to take one such patient--my wife declined as her home was not equipped to meet the patients special needs---so another home took her in. the patient had covid. and died. the home now has several covid positives. imagine if my wife had took her in. most likely others would now be positive--maybe my wife--maybe me.
I think our Parliament where slow off the mark, trying to save money, and failed to work together. I am yet to wear a face mask! I just want to be able to travel again
my wife now insists i wear one when we go shopping. ive worn dispo gloves all the time. apparently they are pointless too.
I think a lot of it was simply that the country didn’t have a stock of face masks at the time so it would have been daft to advise it. What masks we did have were needed in the hospitals and even then there were not enough.
Do they actually protect from receiving the virus, from what Ive read there is a leaning towards they only protect against giving the virus!
I agree. But if all wear a mask then everyone else is protected better. I was willing to wear one early in lockdown but they were very hard to come by then. Same as gloves. And the NHS were crying out for them.
I've had more important things to deal with John not really been on the forum for a few days. Surgery sometime on Monday, after they get a look at the radiographers report in the morning, I think maybe afternoon surgery not sure. Might get out on Tuesday or Wednesday if it goes ok.
You are correct. The only mask that will give you a chance of protection is the European standard FFP3 mask, they are better than the N95 standard, FFP3 masks filter something over 99% of virus sized particles. Surgical masks only reduce the chance of you infecting others and that is only through the physical barrier of the mask reducing the momentum of a cough or sneeze, if you are very close to someone a surgical mask will provide next to no protection from aerosol from breath or speech.
There is little point in gloves. If you bring back bottles either plastic of glass or beer cans then wash them in soapy water that will break up the virus more of less immediately, Fairy liquid is perfect. If you are handling food that is going to be cooked it makes no odds meat is going to get sterilised by the cooking anyway. If you are handling salad items cold meats make sure you thoroughly wash your hands before opening or handling these items. It is packaging that you will mostly pick up the virus from and generally the chances are small as long as you wash before and after while keeping in mind the sequence in which you handle items. When out shopping the best thing is to absolutely avoid touching your face or eyes after you handle any item in a shop until such time as you have washed your hands or used 70% alcohol to sterilise your hands.

Thanks for uploading the photo, John. Seems like people have given up on social distancing. I am in Washington nr. Sunderland today and it looks the same here as it was in Spalding yesterday also. A lot of people are very gung-ho with their safety. They were like this when we saw photos of people in London a few months ago.
I have worn a face mask and gloves since the start of the pandemic and will continue to use them. I have two little kids and it is wise to tool-up IMO. I think I would have been more lackadaisical if I didn't have young kids.

Yes but a common issue is that if a face mask of perhaps the right standard can become moist around the mouth area of the person wearing it and has the potential to be a bug breeding ground!
