I lived in the U.S. for many years. I knew many people who took recreational drugs and some who took harder drugs.
Not many took no drugs.
I was married to an American woman who was a school counselor (uk equivalent is counsellor).
Many things she told me used to make my toes curl.

In the 1980's in Baltimore, there were people on many street corners who were selling "baggies" (small bags of crack cocaine.)
