On that we disagree. Salmond carefully cherry-picked the electrorate and gave the right to vote to EU nationals living in Scotland and Scottish members of the armed forces serving abroad but not to Scottish-born residents of rUK. And giving the vote to 16 and 17 year-olds was a cynical attempt at vote-rigging, albeit in a legal way.

But the greater "crime" was Salmond's - and Westminster's - refusal to allow rUK to vote alongside the Scots. The issue wasn't simply Scottish Independence but the break-up of Great Britain and that affects everyone in the British Isles.

I think he quit as First Minister, following that up rather swiftly by resigning as leader of the SNP.

No alternative really, his presence would have been seen as divisive from all parties, never mind his own.
After all the lies to get to the Holy Grail of indipendence, a bit of honor in admitting defeat, even with gritted teeth.........

    I still don't like him................

The best comment I have seen came from a Catalan friend of Bob Couttie:

"Scotland WON! The Scots got the chance to decide their own future, and they did so!"

Well, it has been confirmed that Salmonds claims on Scottish oil wealth were indeed unrealistic, now that oil prices have dropped radically.

Would not have made a huge difference John, as a total proportion of the Scottish economy it was and is not that large, it was always icing on the cake.

Every Scot I have spoken to is gutted over how it went, and every one of them knew damn fine that it would have been really tough for a long time, the idea that there was some rose tinted notion in the minds of the Scots of a great time ahead was only in the minds of the southern onlookers, I have seen zero evidence that any Scot that voted yes thought it would be easy, they knew it would be freakin hard but they wanted it anyway.

And a large part of why they wanted it was to escape the extreme right wing in England, they knew and know what's coming.

Scotland did indeed dodge the bullet by voting no in the independence vote, I think most people there now realise that they are better off staying in the Union.

If they had voted for an independent Scotland they would have been coming cap in hand back to England before they knew it, oil and the price of oil cannot be depended on.
